Title: Sunrise on ndisles.
Post by: hitech on February 12, 2014, 02:30:30 PM
This is a direct port of ndisles with the current state of our light scattering.

Still things to add to the system but this is the first step in the integration.

Looks good! Is the sun going to rise from below the horizon as it should, rather than centering on the player's altitude as it does now?

in other words is the sun going to go full rotation rise in the east and set in the west..that would really be cool

would be nice to have some day / night instead of always fighting in and endless blue sky day. Looks good so far.

One can still scale the graphics right back down to AH1ish levels if one so desires and get decent FRs. I do that to GV on the crap computer I'm typing on right now. I don't imagine that will change.

Before you were born, we had night time in this game.  When night would roll around, the majority of the players would log off and either come back in an hour after the night was over or just log off for the day.  Those that remained to play during the night, quite a few would just alt+tab out of the game and then go to their video properties and up the gamma level until it was like day time.  Having seen the negative impact night time had on the game and how some would just circumvent it, it was removed.

Things have changed ,like how graphics work in game now,and how they worked then.just cranking gamma up don't work the same as it did, move on. :salute

Yes it does, now it's even easier since the gamma settings are now in game and players wouldn't have to alt+tab out of the game to adjust them.  If you think it's not possible anymore, just go offline and set it to night and up the gamma. Instant day time.

I see you resort to throwing around insults when someone questions you. Fact is this, night as like many things in this game need not be realistic as to where you can't see infront of you. A lot of FPS have "night time" and while its not a realistic night it still sets the mood.

There was no insult in my previous post.  Fact is, the vast majority logged off during night time when we had it.  That is not good for business.  If you were going to make night "unrealistic" then why bother wasting the resources to code it?

Setting the mood for the remaining 50 people left online after 200 log off?  Numbers arent great the way it is, and I HIGHLY doubt darkness will improve this.

Or maybe its because people don't want to play the same game with little changes for 10 years.

Not bad. Though I have to point out the valley between the 2 mountains is not shadowing correctly. The sun rays are beaming down the valley even before the sun has risen above the ground. It cleans up and looks great as the sun gets higher though.  :aok

Actually, the valley is covered in a fog bank which extends around the hill and catches the Sun's rays which are propagated through the mist via refraction.  Just saying.

Another reason also is the sun is coming up behind the mountain. But the valley entrance is directly into the sunlight

With everyone wacking off to graphics now, I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of people stayed online to look at the fancy night time graphics.

New moon, perhaps improved muzzle flash and tracer graphics, who knows.

Especially if they made new fire visualizations, which actually cast light on the environment.

In line with my past comments on including humorous nonsensical additions along side the great improvements towards realism, could I have a random rooster crow sound added at dawn and maybe an owl hoot sound added at dusk?

You know, things that make you go.........  :uhoh wtf was that?

From the viewers perspective you have a valley wall that drops off in front of you exposed to the incoming sun's rays as it rises. The mist in the vally very early on begins to glow with the sun just around the far mouth of the valley. So is Hitech also modeling sunlight reflection as a secondary source of illumination through water vapor?

The sun initially is below the far peak. But low level light rays are interacting with the valley face you are standing back of. And the mist is illuminating at the same time as the sun rises while hidden from view by the far peak.

Everything looks promising so far and I for one cannot wait to see the final product.
