Went to help my Dad (70 years old) get his computer running a bit better and found he had 5 of them running at once :O
Good thing he has a huge monitor or he'd never be able to do anything on his computer. Took me 2 hours to clean the crap out of his box. I ever find someone who writes/sells this crap I'm going to.... well I won't say here so they can't hold it against me :devil

I discovered that in general, choosing advanced install can allow you to uncheck any additions added to what you are really wanting to use. One should always approach the download of freeware with caution, make sure you read each window and uncheck everything.
On my ma's machine, I set her up with a limited account. I set up an admin account with a super password for maintenance. She complains about not being able to do certain things but it helped to prevent many unwanted things. She was a virus magnet before, reinstalled her OS many times.
She was even contacted by an individual who stated her Yahoo account had been hacked and he was willing to fix it for a rather sizeable fee. I immediately deleted that account, even tho I was sure it was not hacked, she could still log with her password. She whined about it but it saved her money and headaches from the creep who was scamming her.
I was sitting in a bar recently in NYC. Some peeps came in, out of towners, and I over heard their convo. They were peeps who designed and implemented these toolbars. I injected myself into their convo and let them know that I made sure their crapware never got used in my machines. I just smiled. They were all young'ins and thought I was quaint.

The line between criminal behaviour and customer service is subtle and very vague, also depending on who's to determine it...

+1 I went home to the folks one day and the number of search engine bars on their browser eclipsed the actually page attempting to load....

I got the version of that thing that locks you out from launching your virus scanners and right clicking on anything. Fortunately it didn't preclude booting from a USB stick and running a deep scan. I couldn't gain control in safe mode. Seems for a while, free file hosting sites were plagued with this when you started a download. You would get warnings saying one of your adobe products needed an emergency update with a very official looking adobe brand window.
Thought adobe like other companies with that kind of business reputation, hunted down anyone falsely using their brand to the fullest extent of the law. Guess you need to be the size of Microsoft to have any real bite.

U.S. companies have zero influence on companies/people outside the U.S. International laws are pretty much a joke, in this area.

Just for the record: About half of the Chinese computers still run XP and for what I've read a great deal of them are pirated. The Chinese authorities aren't too eager to cut privacy of foreign products.
