Title: How to use SweetFX
Post by: Ack-Ack on February 14, 2014, 10:45:45 PM
There is a discussion in the Fighter Ace Q&A (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,359091.0.html) forum about using SweetFX with Aces High.  Since there has been others expressing interest in trying it out, below is the link to download the SweetFX Configurator.

SweetFX Configurator 1.3.3 (http://sweetfx.thelazy.net/?cat=3)

Install SweetFX Configurator and follow the instructions below to add Aces High.

1. Start SweetFX Configurator
2. Click on 'Add new game'
3. Point the program to the aceshigh.exe file [C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High]
4. In the 'Game List' panel, click on aceshigh.exe and click the 'Add SweetFX' button

Now the necessary files have been automatically added to the Aces High directory and you're ready to start tweaking.  If you want to use a preset that has been already made, you can find a couple that I've made that I uploaded to the SweetFX Settings DB (http://sfx.thelazy.net/games/game/445/).  Download whichever preset you want to use and follow the below instructions to import the preset into SweetFX Configurator.  Feel free to upload your own preset to the SweetFX Settings DB to share with others.

1. Click the 'Save / load configuration' button
2. Click on the 'Import preset' button and point the program to the location you downloaded the presets to.
3. Click on Load selected preset (note: due to a bug in 1.3.3, your preset settings might not display when you loaded it.  You'll see the changes in the main settings display though)
4. Click on the 'Save new config' button.

At this point you can either close the SweetFX Configurator and start Aces High normally or you can click on the 'Launch selected game' button.  Before you go online, on the launcher click on 'Video Settings' and set AA to 'None', you'll be using SweetFX to control AA.  Now go online and when the game fully loads, press the 'Scroll' button (default key to enable effects in game) to enable SweetFX.  Just hit the 'Scroll' button again to turn it off.

Ack Ack; I'm kind of slow with new software, what is SweetFx?

It's a program that allows you to apply a suite of post processing shader effects to your games, basically improve the visuals.  If you click on the link to the thread in the Fighter Ace Q&A sub-forum, there are screenshots and a link to a video I made that shows how some of us have tweaked the visuals.  It's literally the difference between night and day.

When I click on Aces High in the game list panel . It does nothing but cause the UI to "blink". I am unable to add your presets. I have to do them by hand. That being said WOW ! Thanks for this ack ack.

There is a bug in the 1.3.3 version of the configurator that causes the preset to sometimes not show when you add it but if you look at the main screen that has the settings with check boxes, you'll see the settings in the preset you've loaded checked.  You could also check to see if the preset loaded by clicking on the 'List changes from default' button.

Make sure you're using version 1.3.3.  It could be that the preset you made or using has a setting that is making AH crash or it could be that your video card can't handle it, though that's usually a result of tweaking the settings beyond what your video card can handle.

I am on 1.3.3

I just tried removing Aces High from SweetFX and it says that an unhandled exception has occurred and it can not find SweetFX\Preset\Black_Mesa_CeeJay.txt in my Aces High Folder. So I can't get rid of SweetFX and play on Vanilla AH2 either.

I didn't tweak any of the settings. I just installed it, tried to open Aces High to see if it works, and it just crashes.

Edit:
Ok, so I found the missing file and fixed that and now it's saying it can't find the path for SweetFX\Shaders\Bloom.h in my Aces High folder. I'm guessing somehow it screwed up, or more likely I screwed up  :o , and the SweetFX folder didn't download all the files it was suppose to. If someone can share their SweetFX folder in their Aces high folder I think that might fix it?  :headscratch:

In your AH folder, delete the following files and folder:
d3d9.dll
d3d9.fx
d3d9_40.dll
dxgi.dll
dxgi.fx
injector.ini
sweetfx_preset
sweetfx_settings
sweetfx_settings.txt.orig
SweetFX folder

You may not have all of the above files if you didn't install SweetFX correctly.

Follow the instructions below again to re-install SweetFX.  Remember, it's important to click on 'Add SweetFX' to add the necessary files.

1. Start SweetFX Configurator
2. Click on 'Add new game'
3. Point the program to the aceshigh.exe file [C:\Hitech Creations\Aces High]
4. In the 'Game List' panel, click on aceshigh.exe and click the 'Add SweetFX' button

Btw, when I go to the SweetFX Settings DB link that you provided I don't see any files to download.  :headscratch:

What am I missing in there?

Hmmm, installed it several times with the same error when I startup AH, "file d3dx9_43.dll not  found". Been using the "SweetFX_Settings_Aces High_AH Improved 1" presets from the DB. Any suggestions? It was removing SweetFX okay and the game ran fine then.

Go into your AH folder and delete the files I listed for Latrobe.  Run SweetFX again, add aceshigh.exe to the game list and then click on the 'Add SweetFX' before you try to load any presets or manually adjust the settings.  Also, make sure that you're running SweetFX as an administrator.

Good to know. Direct X being backward compatible supposedly, many assume that all the DX files installed with W7 are there. I chose to use the DX 9 update awhile ago. It did install some files into the W7 install. Did not change the game but obviously outside stuff like Sweet FX need them.

I figured out the source of another crash problem I was having. I've been running ATI tray tools to configure video settings and it was interfering with SweetFX as I have it starting with Windows. I also launch the game with ATT. I'd get the crash trying to use SweetFX like the others. I tried the other solutions to no avail before I remembered ATT was running. Exited Tray tools--voila--the game started. Started Tray tools back up--crash. I'd imagine other apps like maybe CCC would do it too. If SweetFX is crashing on you try disabling any other video managers running and see if that doesn't clear it up.

BTW I tried a couple of the presets and things look great! I'm gonna play with brightening up the shadows a bit. That's pretty much the only thing that bugs me about the game as I've been seeing it. Always wanted a tool sorta like the levels tool in photoshop for this.

The presets are only a starting point really. Your hardware, monitor and home lighting conditions will alter stuff.
All will need to fine tune for their personal likes.

This is the troubleshooting FAQ found in the SweetFX readme.txt.

The first one is specific to your issue, you'll need to update DirectX to resolve the issue.

Quote
When the mod starts it creates a log.log file next to it's own location.
Open the log with a text editor and see what the problem is.

If no log file is created then the mod did not start.
- Maybe you didn't put the files in the right location?
- Or maybe the game doesn't use DirectX?

Most games use DirectX 9, 10 or 11.
Notable games that use OpenGL (which SweetFX doesn't work with) are all games by id software,
and those games based on their 3D engines.

Q: It says d3dx9_43.dll is missing
A: You need the latest DirectX 9 update.
See step 2) of the installation section.

Q: It does not run with the 64bit version of my game exe.
A: SweetFX is not currently compatible with 64bit versions of games - use a 32bit version.
Boulotaur2024 have released a special version of SweetFX that uses his own proxy dlls that does support 64bit. - find the link for that in the SweetFX thread on Guru3D.
Support for 64bit games in the offical branch of SweetFX is underway - check the discussion thread for the lastest news on that.

Q: My game crashes with SweetFX installed.
A: The log.log file will most likely tell you why.

If you have installed SweetFX correctly and have run the game with the log.log file in the same folder
as the game .exe and the d3d9.dll and dxgi.dll files, then it should be overwritten with debug information that might help you understand why it crashed.

If it hasn't then it contains a helpful guide writen by me - which means your game likely crashed because SweetFX couldn't write to the log.log file.

Some steps to resolve this:
  1) Check that the log.log file is in the same folder as the game .exe and the d3d9.dll and dxgi.dll files.
It's installed there per default so it should be there.

If you moved the .dll's that came with SweetFX to another folder then check in that folder for the correct log.log,
that the injector creates when it runs.

  2) Find out if it's a problem with insufficient user permissions in the game folder you installed SweetFX to.
To do that try running the game with administrator rights by right-clicking it's exe and choosing "Run as administrator"
If that worked then you have found the problem.

To solve it, you can either keep running it as administrator everything, which can be a little annoying in the long run.

You can also right click on the folder that contains this file and then choose "Properties"
From there click "Security", then "Edit", then on your username, and then set "Full Control" to "Allow"
This should also allow Modify, Execute, List, Read and Write - if it doesn't then also set thoose to "Allow"
Now "OK" your way out of the dialogs.
Your user account now has full control for that folder and you don't have to Run as administrator.

Alternatively you can create a new shortcut to the game and right click that and choose "Properties"
Under "Shortcut" click Advanced and check "Run as administrator" and "OK" your way out.
This shortcut will now always run as administrator and the administrator account always has the necessary rights.

  3) Does it still crash?
Try disabling all game overlays (like Origin), recording software (like Fraps), framerate displaying software (like Fraps),
GPU overclocking and tweaking software software and other d3d9.dll or dxgi.dll proxy dlls (like ENB, Helix or Umod)

  4) If the above doesn't work and you can't solve the problem yourself or google your way to a solution then try to get support
online in either the SweetFX thread on Guru3d or your preferred forum.
Note that I prefer not to get support questions as PM's but I'd rather have you post in the thread so others can help you too.
I'm not always in the thread but there is usually always other users.

Q: I don't see any change in the image
A: Try turning off anti-aliasing in the game (not in the mod)
The mod is not compatible with some antialias implementations.
It might be made compatible by setting compability flags.

If not then you can always use the included SMAA anti-aliasing.

Can you post screenshots of your Aces High with the settings you recommend? Particularly, I'm interested in how it looks with shadows on and near the ground.
Title: Re: How to use SweetFX
Post by: bustr on February 19, 2014, 05:53:42 PM
I base everything from High Noon in Aces High when I make changes. The sun at lower angles currently is nicely done. But, at high noon too many buildings, objects, and vehicles\planes have a dark band along the side nearest to the ground. The in game gamma slider is too course for removing it. By the time you get it removed, everything else is to hazed or lumened out to play well. This goes for depth perception over water also.

Below is the injector that controls the darkness or lightness of shadows. It's a balancing act between raising the gain on the RGB pixels used as shadows, to lowering the midrange and increasing the high range to achieve contrast. This balance helps give you back using your tracers to judge lead with from the manned 37mm at high noon. The game is a tad low on the blue input which helps eliminate the haze while supporting brighter tracers.

One player's custom numbers may be horrible to another player's game perceptions. I'm including my numbers to show the contrast for adjusting shadows. The adjustment took me a while by single tenths and hundredths number changes over an evening to test looking for GV at high noon through foliage and watching 37mm tracer streams. Another test was watching the shore battery 8inch tracer and water explosion to 20k yards for clarity. Last night I sank a CV by accident, because I was really targeting fighters on the deck. I was trying to land 10 fighter kills from my shore battery position. Only got 6 before the CV sank.

These adjustments make the game much more fun to play now. I can turn off icons and watch fighters as silhouettes with wings until they vanish as they pass through 11k from me without using zoom in the 88. I'm using a 24 inch HD TV\LCD Monitor.

Oh, and the injectors are doing an admirable job of faking terrain bump mapping, building bump mapping, and raising rivets and panel lines since I keep those off due to the FPS hit. Not sure yet what will happen with clouds. The explosion injector above (.2) starts to create speckling of lines and a slight redraw delay when you change your view direction. But, exposes a larger area of explosion and smoke.

Sweet FX has a 1.5.5 release out, at GURU 3D. The configurator has a Alpha 2.0 release. The 1.5.1 configurator was actually done by the guy who created Sweet FX, CeeJay. He chose to get configger 1.3 with his Sweet FX 1.5.1. I think the configurator guy has been doing other things.

I posted what I did in the other thread. You must make sure you remove all things 1.3.3 or when you add 1.5.1 you will still see the 1.3.3 preset only.
Basically you remove Sweet Fx from game, you remove game exe from sweet Fx, you uninstall Sweet Fx and you go into Hitech Creations>Aces
High>Sweet Fx> presets and manually erase any presets you have.. Leaving the preset will interfere, even if you uninstall 1.3.3. At least it did for moi.

Thank You.  :salute

Very nice, Ack Ack.  I need to look at those setting...might make some minor adjustments to my SweetFX setup (which I've been very happy with).

Could this have anything to do with it?

Sounds like you're using the 344.11 Nvidia drivers and installed the latest version of the Geforce Experience software.  Go into your Windows Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Geforce Experience (it will not uninstall your video drivers so don't be worried) and SweetFX should work again.

I downloaded and got SweetFX to work but for some reason the game wants to use the Intel graphics. If I uninstall it uses the nvidia card. Any ideas?

http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/sweetfx-shader-suite-download.html.

You can download the 64bit .dlls (not needed for AH since it's a 32bit game, but if you also play any games that are 64bit and want to use SweetX) from the link below.

How does this compare to Rive Tuner. Mind you I buy only NVidea and have never had a problem with Riva.

For AH I have only used the game controls. So with Sweet you can use it for Aces High?

RivaTuner is a video card tweak program and SweetFX is a graphics injector (basically a tweak program for graphics), so they are two different things.  Yes, you can use SweetFX with Aces High and once you do, you'll never go back to the regular graphics.

Scroll Lock key is generally near the keypad on a regular keyboard, to the right of the function keys, along with Print Screen (prt scr) and Pause/Break keys.

You can customize what keys to use for SweetFX by going into the SweetFX files and open with Notepad the file injector.ini.

Once the file is open, you'll see a few lines that look like this:

Quote
;toggle shader keycode
key_toggle = 145 ; 145 = the SCROLL_LOCK key

;make screenshot keycode
key_screenshot = 44 ; 44 = PRINTSCREEN

;reload shader files keycode
key_reload = 19 ; 19 = the PAUSE key

Those are the keyboard commands for enabling SweetFX, screenshots and reload shader files.  To change the keyboard command, just edit the key toggle number.   For example, if you wanted to change the keyboard command to enable SweetFX from the Scroll Lock key to the Home key, all you need to do is change the key_toggle number from 145 to 36.  Once you make the change, it should then look like this:

;toggle shader keycode
key_toggle = 36 ; 36 = the HOME key

Once your done, just save the file and play.

For a complete list of the javascript keyboard command codes, go to this site: http://www.cambiaresearch.com/articles/15/javascript-char-codes-key-codes.

Thanks AKAK.  I went ahead and installed per your directions, and your latest FX profile.  Pretty sweet stuff, running pretty smooth too.  Numbers online are low now, but maybe tonight I can test it out with some more people around.

Anyone that doesn't have this installed, really should give it a try.

You can configure SweetFx to make the game look however you want. Some people like bright and oversaturated colors, others like the old-time movie look. Here's a sample of what mine looks like.

Beta for SweetFX 2.0 is out, going to be using that to make presets for the next version of AH. No real reason to make one for the current version of AH, can't make it look any better with 2.0 than you can with 1.5.
