I can't let this day go by without noting that it is the 70th Anniversary of the raid on the prison at Amiens by Mosquitos of the 2nd Tactical Air Force. Mossies of 464 Squadron and 487 Squadron, nominally Australian and New Zealand units respectively (though part of the RAF hierarchy) attacked at extremely low level, breaching the walls and badly damaging the guard's quarters.
The raid has since been nicknamed Operation Jericho, though at the time it was apparently a numbered Ramrod operation, and the tale of it having been aimed at freeing resistance fighters is gradually being eclipsed by the theory that it was part of the greater deception plan ahead of D-Day.
Two Mosquitos were lost, one to flak and one to Fw 190s, including that of the raid leader, Group Captain Pickard. Two of the escorting Typhoons also failed to return.
Lest we forget.

Tho there are still questions about this raid there is no dispute it was one of the finest and bravest acts of flying in the war. :salute

This would be a cool setup for "This Day In WW2"
Allies:
- 1/3 Mosquito VI
- 1/3 Typhoon (no bombs)
Axis
- 1/3 190A8
NOE raid, 190s allowed to scramble only when the target flashes... or targets visible on the radar...
Who hosts? :x

Wasn't that one of the offline Air Warrior Missions?
Was a fun time killer - this post just kicked up a little dust in the old memory corner :)
