Title: P-38J P-38L weight problem

The weight of the P-38j is incorrect. It is the same as the L in game. This would be correct if we had P-38 J-25 the weight would be correct. We have either J-10's first version with flat glass with bulletproof glass incorporated into the windshield. J-15's with revised electrical system.  Finally they could be J-20's with modified turbo regulators. The weight they have in AH2 would place them as J-25's. The only block of J's that weighed the same as the L's. The problem is our J's have no aileron boost or dive flaps. The PJ is paying the weight penalty for equipment it does not have.

I would WAG guess the paint would actually weigh more than the dive flaps mod so maybe the J should weigh more.

The J weighs the same because it accounts for the large balls one must have to fly it.   :)

Keep in mind those J upgrade kits were being flown in so the weight must not have been significant. 

I stand by the idea the L as modeled without the paint may have been say 100-200 pounds lighter than the J as modeled.

Add to that there some that say there would be a slight speed increase without the paint.  Boeing noted that with their plan to delete the paint on the B17 I think I read.  The P38 would have even more notable speed increase.

Somewhere out there is P38 paper justifying the deleting the paint job on the L and the weight of the kit.

Paint schemes don't seem to be closely coupled with specifications of aircraft in Aces High otherwise there'd be only one paint scheme available for the Brewster.

From an old article of the day a P51B(I think) increased its top speed by 8 MPH without paint.  The New York times also did an article about deleting the paint and its benefits.  That would make the P38L's top speed faster than the J by about the same amount.. 

Two hundred kits were being flown so they could not have weighed a great deal.  My guess is the P38L may have weighed 100-200 pounds less than the painted J.

Best I can tell too the default skin is the one used for reflection properties so camouflaged P38Ls still shine. We need something to counteract that shiny, big target in the sky. :)
