Title: new word for the O.E.D.
Post by: PJ_Godzilla on February 24, 2014, 07:52:47 AM
This forum, formerly coined by me (good-naturedly, of course) as "The Temple of High Self-Regard", has inspired me to another new coinage. Before we get to that, I'd like to modify my earlier coinage to, "The Temple of Age-Exceeding Self-Regard". I reckon the clientele is somewhere, generally, around Harley-owner average. But that's just more good-natured ribbing.

Along those same lines, I think the new coinage has to do with this BBS, Skuzzy's rules on this BBS, and the former coinage. The game is competitive. Indeed, someone quoted Herr Addink as saying it was about "ruining the other guy's day". IMO, competition is a good thing, generally.

It was, iirc, during a discussion of the rope-a-dope, leading the enemy into a stall, that it occurred to me.

The new word is "smacktics".

Talking tactics is pure. Talking "smacktics" is more like, "yeah, I judged that Mossie's e-state just right. So-and-so, whom I killed after he stalled for stupidly trying to climb with my k4, really stepped in it on that one. A Real Pilot never would've allowed such an obvious setup but, as we can see, so-and-so (whom I easily killed, in case I failed to mention it), isn't quite up to that standard, is he or she?"

This was based on an actual event. I was pretty amazed that tactical advice on this bbs had actually translated into a Mossie Kill (and no, it wasn't Karnak - I don't think he'd fall for my relatively amateur move). I seem to remember the victim was part of a now-defunct squad. I kept looking back and down and, sure enough, the Mossie started to slew a bit, then stalled. My reversal was a simple left turn (as the 109 prefers). The six was easily aquired after the predictable recovery. The wing came off nicely with a 30 mil hit.

So this entire thing is just to say you came up with a new word?

Nah, it's a "hey, did you hear the one where I roped a Mossie in my 109...." storybook time with a side of smacktics.

After finishing digesting, you will still be empty inside.

Blueberry - Yes, although Dragon sort of caught the ulterior. I say "sort of" because it (what you called "all this" was an attempt at irony - talking smacktics in a literal way while denouncing it generally (by mockery). I liked the kill well enough to remember it but it wasn't anything great.

It's the O' Club. I've seen more fatuous threads here. Besides, it's not just a word. It's a highly descriptive word.

In a special event I ran, Dolby objected to my use of a term, so I invented a new word, which I think should make it eventually into the OED:  proodge.

Examples of usage:

My plane is proodged.  I have to exit the fight.
I caught a 20 mm right in the ol' proodge.
What a proodge.

I hereby grant everyone a perpetual, world-wide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use of the word "proodge".

Your sense of noblesse oblige is noted, Brooke, and earns you a spot in the "Big Book of Sympathy". I like to keep it on the shelf between the "Big Book of Excrement" and the "Big Book of those Known to have contracted a specific STD". Your position on the shelf is therefore advantaged and, in gratitude, I too grant the public use of my new word. Cake for all!!!

Caldera's sarcasm and causticity is also noted, but it only gains him sneaking admiration for his tiptoe-the-line use of a word that begins with g which I dare not use here, for fear of the Skuzzy one. Yes, the "K4" climbs well. Roping in it is a noob trick. There.

Looks like Caldera gave it to me in the proodge over my smacktics.

I should add, there need be local variations for severity of the smacktics. If it's really severe, as in mostly smack, little tactics, use of the word schmacktics is recommended.

Your sense of noblesse oblige is noted, Brooke, and earns you a spot in the "Big Book of Sympathy".

It wasn't an event needing any sympathy; it was an event that inspired a new creation.  You misconstrue the tone of my post -- my story isn't one of lament or sarcasm but of exuberance and serendipity.

I meant it in the more general sense , that of harmony or agreement. It's actually definition 1 in dictionary.com but is admittedly an archaic usage. Then I filed it between the two words it's usually filed between when taken in the sense to which you refer... It's actually kind of an old joke: "you'll find sympathy in the dictionary between s*** and syphilis". I.e. an attempt at humor.

I actually liked the tone, thought it was right in line. I was just riffing off it.

It is. It's also probably worthy of a good schmacktics post: how to rope a '38 with a B-26. It would probably best be led with a disclaimer warning below-average players off the attempt, or something kind of elevating.

with the thousands of sorties that happen every day every single thing that you think hasnt happened it has happened.

-have you ever killed a tiger with a single cannon round from a spitfire?
-ever killed a tiger with one rocket from a pony?
-you ever killed 3 b17's with a single pass?
-you ever won a 5v1 fight?
-you ever won a 6v1 fight?
-you ever been in a 3v1 fight where all 3 friendlies kill shot each other?
-you ever been gotten both wings shot off  with cannons, then rocket vulched and still got a sucessfull landing?
-you ever won a 2 v1 fight while using a c47?
-ever been shot down by a spitfire tail gunner?

the list of of weird things that has happened to me is not by any chance a once in a life time thingy.  a lot of guys can post even weirder things that has happened to them.

I've got my own list that is almost like that:

-- has a Tiger ever killed your aircraft with one shot from its main gun?
-- ever killed yourself by running into a Tiger while trying to hit it with a rocket?
-- you ever been killed by 3 B-17's in one pass?
-- you ever lose in a 5 on 1 fight, where you are the side with 5?
-- likewise, you ever lose in a 6 on 1 fight?
-- you ever been in a 3 on 1 fight where you killshot yourself?
-- you ever gotten both wings shot off with cannons, then rocket vulched, before you ever got off the ground?
-- you ever lost a 2 on 1 fight against 1 C-47?
-- ever been shot down by a spitfire tail gunner? [The one question we share exactly]

I once beat Drex by sitting next to him and watching HIS monitor instead of mine.  And it was because I'm a real pilot and he's just that emperor guy who passes judgment with a simple thumbs up or down, when he meets real pilots.  Yes, this one flies.  No, that one does not fly.  Stupid flight docs, what do they know about anything anyhow?

What was I saying?

Oh yea, this one time I killed Drex, at a con, by cheating.  Which is the only way pilots ever beat Doctors.  Screw you Drex you suck.

Now that's some bonafide SCHMACKTICS talk.
