How in the world can Ireland and Iceland possibly have that much debt? They make Spain and Greece look positively frugal.
-
Those are meaningless statistics on their own and without context. Iceland is big in banking and if a foreign entity deposits a million Dollars into an Icelandic bank then Iceland's foreign debt increases by one million Dollars. By those statistics every singe Luxembourgian citizen owes more then $3 million to foreigners...
As the article says: "Note that while a country may have a relatively large external debt (either in absolute or per capita terms), it could be a "net international creditor" if its external debt is less than the total of the external debt of other countries held by it. For example, Norway, Luxembourg, Switzerland, China and others are net international creditors."

As for America's superior carriers... Unlike Europe you guys need them to get to anywhere interesting. ;)
What possible use could Europe have for such a navy? Invade Canada? :lol
The Middle East, Africa... All the interesting places are within driving distance. In a pinch I suppose we could walk to China.

Ah, thanks. That's what I get for scrolling straight to the table in a Wiki page.
:salute

Some would say they make bigger targets. I'm sure that's what Vlad's thinking right about now.

No worries, Vlad. The current US administration will stand around and do nothing....as usual.

Once the government defaults there will be no funds to run them anymore... :rock

PS Here is a link to an audit performed of the Federal Reserve. In addition to the $17 trillion of public debt the Fed has printed another $16.3 trillion "off book" and lent it to big firms, banks, etc around the world. All of this is printed debt, not backed by bonds, etc., other than the funny bonds the Feds issue then buy themselves. So, double Americas debt. And the formulas that reflect the "off book" debt it is likely up to around $20 trillion now, putting total US debt around $37 trillion. Or so it would appear.

Ah, I see what the OP is saying. The rest of us are better pilots who need much less deck to land on.
I think this is profound and true, well stated OP.

Lend us a carrier for several weeks and we'll find a very good use for it :bolt:
BTW this list is missing one new shiny carrier:

Well, newish...
-
What would Israel do with one carrier?
-
From the look of it (Ukraine) you'll be able to test your 'toys' again soon enough.
-
How? By sailing carriers through the Bosporos? Don't think so. Any military intervention will be from land based aircraft.

The planes have long enough legs to operate from the medierranean.

Nice Pics of the US Virgin Killlands. :salute

We own the government (although I think they'd like us to conveniently forget that at times); what's "theirs" is truly "ours".

Its was North Korea last year and you were all filling your fallout shelters with tins of beans :old:

Then why not fly them from Greece, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania or Bulgaria?

You are sooooooooo optimistic :rofl
You know, I called them toys not because of what can they do but because how they are used :bolt:

The problem is actually Dardanelles, US aircraft carriers are not allowed to pass through (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreux_Convention_Regarding_the_Regime_of_the_Straits#Terms_and_consequences_of_the_Convention) and Russians can (as they operate "Heavy Aircraft Carrying Cruiser" and Black Sea power)
