Title: elevations for terrain update
Post by: caldera on March 04, 2014, 02:11:10 PM
Will it be possible to make steep borders, like sheer cliffs next to bodies of water?  The current editor doesn't allow grades near water.

The terrain resolution is going to be double what it is now IIRC. So you will be able to make slopes up to twice as steep, but not vertical.

I'm glad HTC only tells the CMs this stuff & not the person with the most (single person created) terrains in-game that will need updated. :furious  :)

Much love to my CM terrain team brothers though. :salute

That's it, throw me under the bus. LOL

The current distance between verts is 2640 ft. Hitech has mentioned that he hopes to make it 660 ft in the new version but we'll need to wait and see. Even if that comes to pass, we'll still need to create object for cliffs if we want them idealistic looking. The OP was asking for cliffs so it isn't rocket science to imagine the slope involved for a 100 foot or 300 foot high cliff.

For the MA, IMO, you'll need to jump up 600 to 1200 feet for accomplish the same visual effect.

If the cliffs are objects, doesn't that mean that they're destructable i.e. you can bomb holes to the cliff while you kill the dar stations?

No, since we're talking about avachanl. You can land your plane on them if you like, but you'll get a ditch of course. You can find the Cliffs of Dover and bluffs along the Normandy coast if you care to download the terrain using the custom arena servers.

Any idea what kind of system is going to be required when the new terrain / graphics engine comes out?

They will have to change the "dukes of hazard" jeep air time achievement to 20 seconds.
