Title: Salute to the 13TAS
Post by: Westy on January 30, 2001, 10:16:00 AM
I ran into you folks a few times last night and several times before over the last couple of weeks. <shakes head in amazement> All I can do is salute your skills.

You guys are the best damned pilots in the 51 (well, Hangtime and the 357th are right up there too) and I was in awe of your abilities not only as individual pilots but in the teamwork you've developed together.

 <S>

I'm still waiting to put just ONE bullet in 13TAS aluminum  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Heh, 9./JG 54 has had a few run ins with the 13th TAS. Always interesting engagements.

Personally, I've always been jumped by them.

One engagemnt springs to mind; back a few tours ago, me and Kirin where DweebHunting. e had just been attacked by two spits and a N!K who jumped us and shot them down, when we spot two P-51's high, coming in fast. Noticing the separation in the formation, I tell Kirin "watch out, these guys are wingies, just like us".

Sure enough; one comes screaming down; I evade with a barrel roll, losing speed, and go for the snapshot.

"6666, P-51, closing fast!" I hear over RW. Check 6, d500 one 51. I break low in a fake split s; both P-51's are now zoom climbing with no chance for our 109's to catch them.

The 51's make several passes; always just out the reach of our guns. Am nearly shot down twice and Kirin is in some trouble.

By now, the superior climb rate of our 109's is starting to pay off; I am co alt but slower. Enganging, I scare off one 51 from Kirin's 6, he returns the favour. Situation is looking better.

We're on the offensive now, but the P-51's beautifully make use of e conserving maneuvers and manage to outrun us.

Wise choice, and one of the best 2v2 squad fights I've had. No one won that fight.

I believe Nath has had some runins with the 13th TAS too.

Thanks Ice. You offer has to be one of the best complimens I've ever recieved in my online time <S>  Make my head well!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Actually I could use the ego boost having been flying more cold than hot lately. Although being surrounded by several of 13TAS last night the "fight or flight" instinct kicked in - cept there is no 'flight' option when dealing with a 51, let alont 4 or 5   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I just wished I'd filmed it. I've been so used to not filming my fights because of the now fixed dump bug I used to suffer from

Anyway, I just feel that when a great group of guys, like yourselves, work so hard and excell at mastering aircombat here that they should be acknowleged by the community!

Agreed Westy. I have run into these guys quite often, much to my chagrin. The 13th is an excellent squad. Especially in their employment of tactics. Very rare do I see a lone 13th member.

Westy,

There are few pilots in the arena that can handle a plane as well as you do. Your flying was supurb! A single P-51D is not a match in a 1 vs 1 knife fight with  "your" YAK. I think if the truth do known...WE were in awe of "YOUR" abilities!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

SALUTE <S>

Thunder is guilty of shameless self promotion (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

There are so many skilled sim pilots in this sim...to be in the air and to engage an enemy often yields more than I care to deal with.

As squads go, nothing beats the comradere and friendships that are formed over time...I have friends here that I first got to know back 11 yrs ago in the original 13th TAS.

If you're not in a squad, I would recommend it highly...you just might make some friends for life (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I took this at last Tuesday squadnite. For those who haven't seen use up close and personal.

BTW we ran into a similar flight of diciplined P-47s flown by the VMF-214 "Black Sheep"that night. It was a fun engagement!

Nice!!  Great formation discipline Thunder and team! These screen shots you put here are pretty damn impressive.  Now that the film bug is fixed I'll try to do the same.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Add all of the kills by all other planes and the 51's got more.

I wouldn't wanna be 19 years old with 70 hours on the stick flyin a 109 over Germany in 1945.. or a pedestrian in Veracruz now.

It sounds like a ludicrous statement but I have seen in print that the Mustang killed more aircraft then all Allied types combined. Maybe that is what he meant  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Interesting stat.  Would you happen to know how many pilots total flew each type of plane?  Anyone?

874 P-51D/K's were delivered to the British.
200 were license built in Australia.
8,102 total D/K's were built in America.

Someone else will have to dig up the earlier models' production numbers.
