It's just a show of force to remind the Dissidents in the Ukraine what's waiting for them if they want to try to retake the Crimea.

A situation where Ukraine tries to re-take Crimea from Russia, doesn't sound very likely. Ukraine has inferior manpower and military units compared to the Russian force in Crimea at the moment, which is about 20,000. Ukraine, which is currently pulling troops out of Crimea can't sustain an attack on the Russian forces there, not that it would even make a difference whether they were pulling troops out or not....
It would be suicide for them to bother trying to take it back.

Russia needs the Crimean Peninsula, yes, and no one should be surprised by what they did. Will they stop there? Unfortunately I doubt it because it would be too easy to annex everything in their path to the Black Sea.
The problem for the west is that the Ukraine allowed the removal of their nuclear weapons, which was handled by the US. If the west doesn't defend them now, what message does that send to Iran and North Korea?
The lesson so far: He who has nucks doesn't need to depend on fickle western super powers for their protection, and everybody else is meat for a hungry aggressor.
If I had family in the Ukraine, I'd send them a plane ticket asap.

It's surprising in the days of the internet that people still rely on the media for the bulk of their information.
If you were to speak to some of the Russians living in the Ukraine, or even the relatives of Russians in the Ukraine you'd have a much clearer picture of what's happening and it certainly doesn't reflect the picture being painted by our media.

Of course not, they're being fed huge propaganda by Putins media.
