Doesn't need to be exact, just give you an inkling of what you're up against so you can meet them vertically as well as horizontally. Maybe a 2,500 foot margin of error. After all, radar did provide altitude information as well.

My initial thought is that this could massively increase the altitudes attackers would come in...

Either that or discourage people from the fight itself... One guy hangs out 20k and keeps a high dar indication just to scare people...

The climb before entering the fight is always a weighing of patience against advantage, something like this could help one make a more rational choice about that. But now that I think bout it, perhaps some indication of the *average* altitude of the bandits in a given sector would be a better idea.

i thought the size or shade indicated the height of the bad guy--dark red low--light red high as long as you have radar????
-
It's a bit of info I've often felt was lacking. I'd be happy with 5k or even 10k increments, just to get an idea if they're in the weeds, medium alt, or high.
Interface design might be an issue though to keep it readable.

Why ruin the surprise :)

Why ruin the surprise :)
Hehe. I think it's a good idea purely for selfish reasons. It would just make my day a bit easier defending if I know it's for the most part a smash and grab below 5k versus a buff mission at 20k. I generally operate as though it's a high alt mission all the time, and often enough wind up wasting a buttload of time when I could be headed in sooner.
I like the average idea much better than the max alt one.
Lusche has a point though. Knowing their alt means you're going to want to come in higher. Endless circle of climbing.
I suppose it's not terrible just coming in at 20k all the time.

I don't see a need for it and it wouldn't be on my want list, but if it happened I would only want it for whatever country has the most in dar.
-
Did the Home Front radar in Britain tell them the altitude of the incoming Luftwaffe? :headscratch:

I do... (and I have said before) If for no other reason but to watch the score monkeys mach buffet all the way to the deck when I show up co-alt... Then I get 10 minutes before they are back on their perch at which point I am under 10K and they won't come down :rock

Yup. I am there to try to keep the pickers off my guys when I can.

Yes, I think so but after the initial go, I would think most would leave the alt monkeys up high and just go under them.
Might be like the night time thread in that it seemed like a good idea at the time.

... and the monkeys turn out to be bombers (which, contrary to popular say, are currently mostly not attacking bases from 30k) which flatten the hangars ;)
I will explain my thinking later in a bit more detail... now I have to prepare dinner, and pollock with rosemary roasted potatoes is more important than Aces High :x

Yes, they had alt and at least some guess as to whether they were dealing with bombers or fighters.

Perhaps the enemy dot could appear purple for below 10K,, red, for 10k to 20k, and pink for 20k and above :D

I think you're implying something, particularly with the purple and pink color choices :devil
-
not entirely against the idea.. but i dont think it should be 100% accurate
but this would increase rate of suicide r-dar porkers massively
but i like the idea...as long as there is still a "guess" at it..

No, I was thinking of the *sector* bar indicator giving such a clue, in the same way it roughly clues you into numbers of enemy in that sector. Sorry if I was unclear.

NO!
Please NO!

well with the ability for players to change the icon colors for enemy and friendly,,it might be diffecult to id badd guy icons low or high if different colors are used to id them. i don't know maybe somebody can think of something to use.

I'd rather see dot size, bigger the lower they are, then I know 'TARGETS HERE!' ;)
Or alternately:
below 10k dot
10-20k a line through the dot -
20+k, a + sign instead of a dot.
Good for us colorblind folks too. ;)
I'm really torn on this because on one hand, dar has some kind of indication of altitude, on the other hand it could easily create a world of running altmonkeys, which I would not like.
