Title: 7 or 8?
Post by: BuckShot on March 28, 2014, 08:52:53 AM
Its time to replace my ten year old XP PC.

I use windows 7 at work and like it. I've never used windows 8, but it looks very different, and i've heard bad things about it. "oh, you wouldn't like windows 8."

Should I buy 7 or 8? Any suggestions and why?

Thanks,

Buck ~S~

Thanks for the quick response!

So I'm guessing they're will be an option to choose that 7\64 when I buy?

I'm a computard.

Thanks Again

I'm online looking at PCs and parts. I just decided that I'm not going to build one.

I looked at the Alienware X51 but $700 is a bit steep.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a canned setup that can run AH at high settings?

If you pay 100-200 dollars more than you would pay if you build yourself, you can get a ready built computer. For less than 700 bucks you won't find any ready built solution that will run modern games properly. They'll fool you with fancy ram amounts etc. and hide the fact that the graphics card is a 7310 extra special neutered version worth 10 bucks that can't run games.

Thanks. I wish I had the time and patience to learn to build one. They can't fool me if I don't even know what a fancy ram amount is.

Is the NVIDIA GeForce gtx 645 w/ 1 GB GDDR5 any good?

Which flux capacitor should I buy? Har har

GTX 750 Ti, that 645 won't do much for AH.

I just found this in build your own section in CyberpowerPC. Now it's up to a grand. Does anyone see anything here that is not needed or can be downgraded?

Thanks

Self built this system shouldn't be more than 600. Other than that it should be able to run AH great.

When you say self built, do you mean order all the parts and physically put them all together yourself?

Thanks anyways. That's what I'm looking to avoid. I don't have the time, temper, or patience to learn.

I guess I'll just have to spend the extra $$$.

I managed to whittle down some of the things I selected and reduce the price to $768.

Yeah I missed that you had selected the Asetek water cooler, that's an unnecessary expense in your setup. Now it looks much better although for that money you should still get an intel cpu instead of AMD.

I managed to get it down a little more, and with Intel CPU. The keyboard and mouse are free.

Should I consider something other than the standard cooling fan and standard mutha board?

If you build it yourself you'd probably be able to get about the same thing for the same price but with an i5 cpu and maybe some other upgrades like a 2TB HD instead of 2TB, etc.

Win7 premium 64 bit OEM goes on sale for $79ish every month at newegg, probably get the same price on amazon.  They're charging you $104.  Doing some very rough mental math, it looks like about the markup on every component in that build is about $30 on every part.

But if you're not going to build it yourself, the main thing you'll upgrade in the near future would be the cpu.  If 1TB HDD is enough for you then don't waste more money on an overpriced upgrade from the builder.  The system you listed should run AH just fine, and you will have a reasonable way to upgrade it later on if you need more power, so that's good.

Thanks. I'm definitely not going to build one on my own. Saving the extra $ for the OS makes sense, but I wouldn't even know where to begin to install it. Hardware ends up broken when I try things like that. The extra $20 is worth it to me by keeping my mouse and keyboard functional, my heart rate down and my knuckles unbloodied. In the end, I think I'd actually be willing spend up to $200 more for all that, so Mr. Ripley's statement about the savings in building your own sounds about right.

As always, thanks for all the speedy responses and input guys. That's what is so great and underrated about the Aces High forum.

OK guys, three more questions;

Besides $36 less for the 750, what's the difference between the Nvidia 750 and 750Ti? I don't know enough to decipher the specs.

What is a good anti-virus to use?

Which component will allow me to run two monitors?

The 750 Ti has twice the memory. Memory is a pretty big deal.

ESET NOD32

You can run two monitors with either 750. In fact, you can run three with a cable from each output.

For antivirus I recommend ESET NOD32

Or personally I would get ESET Smart Security 7

Also, as eagl posted, I recommend going with an i5 CPU  over getting an Intel I3

Best of luck to you

Hey I had the same problem when ripley and others were telling me to build my own comp. I did many reading and got the entire idea of building a computer. Its basically just screwing some screws and plugging things in where the motherboard tells you to plug it. The only problem I might still have is info on PSU. higher the Power is, is that better or worst? I know it has something to do with the amount of parts I have to supply but having a bit extra power left over would that cost a big deal or do I need to get exactly what the system is asking for?

When I upgraded to the i5 for +$70, the configurator let me upgrade to the 2 TB HD for 0$ extra. The FPS estimation increased a bit too.

Yea just smart shop. U don't wana get everything from one website. If u can save $1 even that adds up. All that saving can get u a nice bottle of booze so u can celebrate it own build.

With help from some of you, I'm probably getting this setup from CyberpowerPC. It's a bit more than I wanted to spend, but hey, I haven't bought anything nice for myself in a while.

I'm not building anything. I spend my days at work tinkering with air and water quality monitoring equipment; tiny parts, air pumps, sensors. The last thing I feel like doing when I get home is more tinkering. The extra $$$ for someone else to put it together is worth it for me.

Thanks guys

With help from some of you, I'm probably getting this setup from CyberpowerPC. It's a bit more than I wanted to spend, but hey, I haven't bought anything nice for myself in a while.

I'm not building anything. I spend my days at work tinkering with air and water quality monitoring equipment; tiny parts, air pumps, sensors. The last thing I feel like doing when I get home is more tinkering. The extra $$$ for someone else to put it together is worth it for me.

Thanks guys

Aside from the graphics card which is entry level this setup starts to look pretty good. The 750ti is recommended only for cases where your power supply is real limited. You don't have that problem so you could get a more powerful 660 for almost the same money.

CyberPowerPC uses substandard PSUs as is. Just fair warning.

The 660 requires a 450 watt PSU so even if his 600W is a cheap one it shouldn't pose a problem.

The VGA is weak compared to the other parts. Either be a cheapo, save some bucks and just get an i3 (noone would notice any difference in gaming performance) or get a much better video card, gtx 660ti/670/760 for example.

I want to point out that the suggestion for the 750 Ti was to better a 645. Stepping down to an i3 system is not an improvement, and likely it would be a mistake since there is an updated version of AH coming soon. Chose an i3 when you have to have an Intel processor, but performance is not crucial. Choose an i5 when you need performance in games. Choose i7 when you have other programs that will benefit from the extra cores (I don't think AH does).

The 750 Ti also does not require a connection to the PSU directly. This PSU will fail, and probably within the first two years. If you spend any more money on a more powerful GPU then you are risking that investment along with everything else. That said, the most important thing for the near future is shader processors and GPU memory frame (the more the merrier).

My advice has always been to get a quality PSU first. You can get by with the 750 Ti and save your money for the day that the Maxwell (800 series) comes out. The 800s should require far less power from the PSU and offer much more quality, but until they are out its anyone's guess.

The last thing I would do is drop to an i3 CPU in favor of more GPU.

It arrived yesterday. I plugged everything in and fired it up.

The lights came on, I could hear the drives, but nothing on the screen. It came with 3 CDs but no instructions; The windows 7 CD, motherboard driver, video card driver.

I already emailed tech support and am waiting to hear from them.

Any ideas? Am I missing something simple? Should I put one of the CDs in? Thanks.

If you assembled it yourself make sure that the 4 pin auxiliary power is plugged to the motherboard (usually top left corner) and the video card power cable(s) are connected if it requires them. Failure to do either one will result in no post.

Did you assemble the computer yourself or did you just plug in the cables? If it came ready assembled sometimes it can happen that the display card gets loose on transport. Make sure all the cards and ram modules are properly seated by pushing them down one by one (with the computer turned off).

The very least you should get is a logo or a text when you start the computer. If you get only a black screen on startup no installation dvd is going to help you, your machine doesn't even start yet.

Thanks. It came assembled. I'll figure out how to open the case and try that. I removed four thumb screws from the back but the sides won't come off.

Which CD should be in it?

You need to slide the side metal backwards, it can be tough. Just make sure that if you touch any component inside the computer case, ground yourself to the chassis with your other hand FIRST. If it came ready assembled your safest bet would be to contact the customer service before opening the case not to void your warranty. You'll need to worry about the discs only after you get the computer to post first.

Oh and CALL the support, don't wait for an e-mail.

Some ideas:

Something has got loose during the transportation. Happened to me when I tried to boot my rig at the con last weekend.
Your motherboard seems to have a video chip of its own. Since you can hear the drives it sounds like your computer is actually booting. Try the motherboard video connector. If that works, your video card is loose.
You have plugged your monitor to the actual video card instead the motherboard one, haven't you?

If only the fans rotate but the hard disk stays silent and the screen remains blank, it might be the video card, a memory stick, cpu cooler cable being loose.

As MrRipley said, you'd need the CD's only after you've successfully booted. If the computer came preinstalled, you'd only need them for reinstallations.

Thanks Bizman. I plugged my monitor into the back in the only place I see to plug it in.

Which was where?

Does your monitor cable look like the top or the bottom one?

If it's the top one, you have plugged your monitor to the motherboard most likely and you need an adapter to connect to your actual video card which has a slot resembling the cable on the bottom side in the picture. The adapter looks like this:

The top blue one. I called tech support. They said to look for another socket at the very bottom of the PC. I'll check it out tonight.

Rip and Biz...big ~S~ to you. Thanks.

Ok then you will either need a new monitor or an adapter. Your current monitor may also have a DVI connector (the white one) if so, you have to get a matching cable.

So nothing is probably wrong with your computer you just plugged the monitor to the wrong port.

Rip, the MSI B85M-P33 mATX has both type of connectors. So the correct question should be "did you plug into the vertical or horizontal connector?"

He already said his monitor uses VGA. Since current nvidia graphics do not have VGA ports anymore and he said there was only one place to plug it to, it's clear that he plugged his monitor to the IGP instead of the graphics card as that's the only VGA connector available in his computer and he has three DVI connectors. ;)

The next step would be as you said, to make sure he plugs the monitor to either one of the horizontal (bottom) connectors using a proper cable or an adapter.

Its working now.I had the monitor plugged into the wrong port. I've never had a PC that had more than two monitor Ports. I have two each of what you pictured. the correct Ports were not visible as I was contorting myself between the wall and the PC to plug things in.. I feel pretty dumb about it.

thanks for all the help guys.

Buck, no need to feel dumb, things like that happen to everyone. I just "fixed" a "broken" monitor by pushing the monitor cable into the connector and securing the screws. The couple was already going to buy a new one, since the current one started to lose colours. When I first started it, the image had a deep red hue. Funny thing is, the husband is a retired doctor who's studied engineering as a hobby. The wife teaches nursing as her own business. It was the hubby who got the idea of calling me before running to the shop. This proves that studying pays even at older age by keeping one humble enough to call for an expert if needed.  :t

Rip, thanks for the nVidia connector info. Haven't been looking at them that way, although I've seen quite a few.

This PC that some of you guys helped me pick out is working great. I run ah with everything maxed, slider too. I never drop below 60. Reflections in the glass, detailed grass, all that stuff.

...a little late for thanks, but thanks just the same!

There is no direct upgrade path from XP you'll need a complete reinstall. But that's not a bad thing, you should always install clean anyway to avoid problems.
