While supposedly based on the novel of the same title by author William Brinkley, it shares very little in common with it, other than some character names and the ship's name. Still it looks interesting, and given the recent Ebola outbreak in Africa, the complete rewrite of the plot is at least timely. The original story involved a world-wide nuclear war, where the USN destroyer Nathan James (NJ) is searching for a safe haven to re-start the human race. In this new series (produced by Michael Bay), the NJ is sent off (to Antarctica, it looks like) under radio silence to do some research, the nature of which is classified and even the skipper isn't privy to the what or why. From what I can gather, the ship departed on its mission prior to the true nature of the outbreak becoming public knowledge. While they're under radio silence, the 80% of the population is wiped out. Scattered remnants of various countries military, desperate to find a cure, go on the hunt for the NJ; apparently they learned of the true nature of its mission, to discover a cure, even when the ship's skipper didn't know.
My thinking is that this will probably be a limited-run series, a mega-mini series in the vane of "Last Resort". I'm going to watch it (stars June 22), since I'm always up for a good apocalypse story. There are several trailers available on IMDB.com and YouTube.

Kinda sounds familiar. :D
All kidding aside, sounds like something I'd watch.
