Title: I don't do this much.... but...
Post by: SkyRock on April 03, 2014, 03:18:20 PM
here is my little rant/whine/spewingoflogicalreason....

the map that is up now, and the last one, are by far the two worst maps we have... the fights are over Vbases and every lil timid twit and his buddy are afforded the safehaven of vbase ack when they make their 550mph perched pass at you... haven't had one decent engagement in 2 days because of these maps...

rant over....

Agreed, but whining on the BBS does nothing about it.

The solution?

Get higher than those guys and pick them instead.

I agree as well.  I think it's more about the design.  When will Festers map be in the rotation?

the rant/whine was not about getting picked... it would take more than one/two to do that...  it's that the two maps in question have Vbases in between long distances to air bases.... so the meeting of enemies is usually over the vbase... bah... I've said enough about it already.... just disappointing to say the least....  :aok

The maps are a problem. If they are going to run the Himalayan range they should consider air-spawns on certain fields. Upping and flying 20 minutes to get to 20k (because everyone else is 20k minimum) just isn't cutting it.

I really dislike Beta. Those mountains force everyone up high and once across them few want to give up their alt and fight in case they get trapped below the border mountain ranges' height and can't run home. It is also the worst looking map, those roads running along cliff faces ruin suspension of disbelief. Numbers online always seem to be down when that map is up. In fact the only good thing about it is that it rarely lasts for more than one evening.

I quite like Grinder though. Its the nicest looking MA map, lots of CV action and far fewer mountains acting as barriers.

Beta2 was the only map in rotation that made LWB the most 'popular' arena when it was up in LWO. No other map made players move in numbers to the "secondary" LW arena each time it was up.

So can it be pulled?  I would rather play the same map over and over than have a map that causes folks to log.

Grinder is a wonderful looking map, however it is by far the worst map in the game for fights.  The distance between bases is way too far.  Just logged in tried two (the only two) fights on the map didn't fire a shot, saw two enemies.  Alt F4'd.  I'll try again when a new map is up where I don't have to take a drop tank to get to an enemy base.

there are so many gutless players in this game, its a wonder that we can ever get a fight at all. some of these maps just make it worse.

Admiring great skill and being happy that a man of great skill is again flying in Aces High is not "ankle" anything nor "stud" anything.  It is pure unadulterated joy and excitement.  :aok

Must you disparage?   Really?   Must you?  :headscratch:

This got me thinking. Would it be possible to make a graph of kill+deaths/time for each MA map or does the data not allow that? Perhaps one for A2A and one for G2G.

This is somewhat possible in a limited way, but requires a high personal effort. I can relatively easily track plane and Gv kills and deaths up to near real time, but not really A2A and G2G - this one I can basically do only for longer periods of time (I do that per tour routinely).
But as there is no way for me to auto track the map rotation I would have to monitor the arena manually, which requires a lot of time and devotion ;)

Well the modified beta terrain is designed to encourage base capture. If you dont want to fly over the mountains and the v bases then you have to capture bases. You'll notice knights capture bases on that map, pretty much for that reason. Thats not an endorsement, just an observation.

Thanks for that.

My favorite bird: the albatross - a seabird distinguished by its very long, narrow wings that allow it to soar for hours without tiring.  Albatrosses are among the largest flying birds in the world, and their large, webbed feet also allow them to walk well on land, unlike many pelagic birds.  http://birding.about.com/od/birdingglossary/g/Albatross.htm (http://birding.about.com/od/birdingglossary/g/Albatross.htm)

Albatrosses are colonial, nesting for the most part on remote oceanic islands, often with several species nesting together. Pair bonds between males and females form over several years, with the use of 'ritualised dances', and will last for the life of the pair.

A breeding season can take over a year from laying to fledging, with a single egg laid in each breeding attempt.

... the great albatrosses have the largest wingspans of any extant birds, reaching up to 12 feet (3.7 m).

A Laysan albatross, named "Wisdom" on Midway Island is recognized as the oldest wild bird in the world; she was first banded in 1956.    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albatross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albatross)

At 63 years old, Wisdom the Laysan albatross hatches another chick. Last year she and her mate raised another chick to fledging, and this year their newest baby has just hatched!

Well of course, the bellybutton lint you collect while climbing out and getting to action is useful tinder for setting those rice kites on fire.

what i think it is---is that people are getting to lazy to fly any distance to find a fight..if there was to be an air spawn,it should be no more than half way to the base..if put to a vote,i would vote for no air spawn.

Yes, I can see how the arena resets would be a problem. I guess it would need a group of players to accurately report timezone-corrected map reset times for a single rotation on a BBS thread. Is the kill and death data time coded or just per tour?

GV kills+deaths/time and aircraft kills+deaths/time would still be interesting stats to judge how well the MA maps are working though.

[/quote]

In HTC's database they are time coded, we only have access to the simple numbers per tour. (Stats page)

GV kills+deaths/time and aircraft kills+deaths/time would still be interesting stats to judge how well the MA maps are working though.

Those numbers would have only a somewhat limited significance. They show some general activity, but there are factors missing. We don't get any (player) k/h from them, and not the number of players in the arena at any given time. When we have 30% GV kills on one map and 60% GV kills  on another, it doesn't really tell us how much more GV's were used. Could be just 20% more players in GV, but with a much higher rate of kills per hour due to the map design (CraterMa).

As I had done such a thing before (about 18-24 months ago), I will try to dig the numbers up...

But once you capture the second vbase you can have even further to fly to find a bandit. They were all hovering over their base waiting for the attack, rather than meeting us in the middle, at least the Bish side. That is when I logged, it was ~15mins to get to a fight... The Rook side seemed to be allowing us to capture everything.
