Did this change recently? On maps with long distances between radar rings (like over water), I know I've been able to ditch without it counting as a capture. Recently, all of my ditches outside of radar rings have been counted as captures, even if there don't appear to be any enemies around.

You are misinterpreting the ditch rules. It is a ditch if the closest base to you is friendly, including CVs or VBs. It is a capture otherwise.
-
Not as fussed about this as I am getting a ditch for having one wheel off the runway having landed a cripppled plane.
Just imagine the crew chief as they dragged you, bloodied and exhausted fromthe ruined cockpit 2 feet from the runway in your wrecked fighter "this is going on your record as a ditch Son :furious"

Isn't there something about how close an enemy player is as well?

6K, IIRC.

Only for GV, not for planes.

Correct. This is why it is so irritating when you kill a bogey over his enemy territory and he manages a lucky ditch and you aren't credited a kill. Conversely, it is very satsifying when you are the ditcher, and you are able to withold a kill from an enemy you are indignant for. :)

most likely an enemy CV closer to you than your nearest field. what grizz said.

Who are you?

and why does anyone care about ditch vs capture?

k/d ratio is affected.

... as well as all other catgories that are " /d" :old:
And yes, it also doesn't give the enemy a kill, which probably is even more important to many players (after all, nobody cares about score at all, right? ;) )

You are quite correct. :)

I got a ditch after an oil leak last night just outside of the ring. Seems to work as posted.
Just as satisfying is blasting a ditcher before he ef's.

This could be abused to locate CVs... :noid

Ugh the skilled ditch !! I had so many pilots do this to me, it drove me INSANE ! good 5-10 minute fight, you finally get the upper hand and score some crippling shots.. then he ditches and you don't get the satisfaction of a hard earned kill :bhead
That being said... I pulled off my first successful ditch a few nights ago. my F4u-1A against a NIK. great fight, I got a few good hits, reversed on him a couple times, but he eventually out turned me and took half my wing. I was able to set her down on her belly, and while he turned to come back for a death blow.. I ditched. I must admit... I smiled as his PMs started coming in calling me every name in the book. DENIED :devil

Isn't that a war crime?
