Title: So You Want To Hit a CV at 6000 With A B-25H
Post by: bustr on April 15, 2014, 02:32:02 AM
I found a Marine WW2 1945 after action report for B-25J with the 75mm cannon mounted. Their attack profile was to approach the target at 1500ft, then diving to 1000ft before reaching 6000 yards from the target. From 1000ft 6000yds out the would fire their first round. About every 1000yds they would fire another round until 2000yds. Unless they were going to low level bomb, 2000yds was the max range for Japanese light ack.

I tested this gunsight starting at 200ft for my attack run. Then when the CV or Cruiser was at the 6000 marks, popup for the 6000yd aimpoint and fire. That would be at about 1000ft, and I would dive at the CV firing at 5500, 5000, 4000 and 3000. Only once in testing did I hit 6000, 5500, 5000, 4000 and 3000 one after the other. Usually I hit at 2 or 3 range markers on my run.

There is a readme with the zip package along with a B25 gunsight for shooting ships and a gunsight for GV and land targets. There is also a PDF of screen shots to show how to use the ship gunsight. These screen captures are just a preview. Read the PDF.

Do not unzip this directly into the game's sights folder. Each gunsight.bmp has to be copied with it's gunsight.mil file to the sights folder.

If you up a B25 at A16 on NDisles you can taxi to the end of the runway where a cliff falls off. That's how I was able to set the range for 6000 and the other ranges in the gunsight.

For me in testing that was 4000. The AAF manual gives 5000 as max effective range. But, the Marines are a different breed when it comes to any kind of popgun.

You will still have to practice offline with it to hit anything. Just like trying to hit a tank at 6000 when you are in a tank and the last yard marker in the gunsight is for 4.5k. You pull the tank gunsight allll the wayyy uppp until the 6000yd tank disappears, keep elevating counting 3 one thousands, and "Hail Mary". At least I gave you a lead hold off marker to account for the ships travel time and a pretty picture for where 6000yds is hitting the offline target. The rest is offline practice.

In ww2 the average for hitting a ship at 4000yds with an optical sight was 1 round in 12. Offline I was hitting at 4000, 1 in 3 runs during testing. 6000, 1 in 8 runs. I got a single perfect run hitting at all markers from 6k in to 3k after several hours of making runs to verify the range markers and ship widths.

So you want a film. Make it your self of you practicing offline.

Hey Bustr,  I downloaded the file, put the tank site in the B-25H, and followed your instructions. The site is very small and difficult to make out the details.  Is the how it's intended to be or what am I doing wrong?   :salute

Do not unzip this directly into the game's sights folder. Each gunsight.bmp has to be copied with it's gunsight.mil file to the sights folder.

Says the same thing in the readme. Without the size control file, well....with it the thing should be gigantic.

Bustr, are your B25-H sights still available?  The download link seems to have expired.  I would like to try them, are they available anywhere else?

Cheers,
Ilmars
