Title: Josephine, My Flying Machine
Post by: Greebo on April 15, 2014, 11:05:30 AM
Thanks to Lyric1 for finding the info for this skin.

This is "Josephine, My Flying Machine" a P-47M of the 56th FG, 62nd FS flown by 2nd Lt. Leo Butiste in January 1945. Lt. Butiste shot down two FW 190s plus one probable.

Thanks guys, glad you like it. I intend to do a black 61st FS P-47M at some point, so I am on the lookout for some info including a good photo of one that's not already been skinned.

Thanks Aztec, that is just what I was looking for. I'll add that one to my list.

What color is that really? It seems to be too blue to be black, but too dark to be insignia blue ore even USN gloss sea blue.

Its been a while since I researched the P-47M, but IIRC no one is quite sure what black and blues were used by the 61st and 63rd respectively. The 62nd are known to have used RAF paints. My guess is that the 61st used the USAAF's late war night camouflage colour, Jet black. This was a slightly blueish shade of black, RGB 33,32,37. However if anyone has better information I'd love to hear it.

There is a 56th/61st skin in the game, but it is not this one.

I have a skin by Fencer that has the name "Sue" in the same calligraphy and location. ID letters are the same as my photo as well...HV- K ....also lacks the light blue border around the insignia.

Don't know all the ins and about skinning Skuzzy...is this perhaps an orphaned skin?

I just checked Krusty's  Ah skin catalog. 56 FG/ 61 FS by Fencer is indeed HV-K. The caligraphy is red on the skin but apears yellow in the photo.

That explains why I missed it.  I cannot see red on green.  It all turns to green for me.  Damn pastel color blindness!

The tail numbers are different though.

Really? That's odd. I couldn't read the numbers in Krusty's screenshot. The tail is bathed in shadow.

I can't see any tail number on the picture in this thread either.

I am not looking at Krusty's whatever.  I am looking at the skin in the game and what Greebo has submitted.

It's actually a good tool for a player to preview skins outside of the game itself.  You should check it out.  http://www.nakatomitower.com/ahskins/

Be that I'm on a campus computer and not my own with AH installed, it's the only resourse available right now.

It does it based on screenshots.  When skins get updated or a model gets updated, the ones at that site become worthless, unless Krusty is maintaining it and updating the screenshots as we change skins and models.

Skinners can now upload screenshots of their skins, when they submit a skin to us.  We intend on using those shots for a new version of the skins download page, where you will be able to see the skin.

True; and I am unsure if krusty does that.  Maybe a good project for the skuzzmeister and HTC to do. :aok :aok

The time it would take to create the 950+ screenshots is prohibitive.   That is why we offered skinners the option to upload a screenshot with the submission.  It is the only way we are going to be able to do it.

Is it safe to assume that the new page will be available soon, since the current one hant been updated in a few months?

OK, I checked in-game and the existing 61st FS P-47 skins are:

HV-K "Sue" by Fencer
HV-Z (Polish flag) by Kazan
HV-M "Pengie" by Kazan

The only other one I've found so far is HV-W "Lil Snorkey". The only problem with this one is I can not make out the tail airframe number which was generally painted in red on the black and so does not stand out well in B&W.

There's an AH BBS post on P-47M skin ideas with a photo of this plane here (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php?topic=275507.15) and some history in this Van's Air Force BBS post here (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php?topic=275507.15).

Edit: Just found photos of HV-Q "Joy Boy" and HV-J "Lorene". HV-J currently looks favourite as it has the best nose art.

Lorene is in the game Greebo. There is actually 4 61st "M" skins in the game " Lorene" HV-J being one of them.

That's odd, its not showing up on the hangar list in-game. Never mind, I'll do one of the other two unless something else turns up.

That is odd Greebo but rest assured I'll be happy with any 56th skin you choose to do. :salute

I found I could see that skin online but not offline. The problem was that I had created a folder called "p47m_1" into which I put my P-47M skin files so I can take screenshots of them offline. However in offline mode the game replaces the skin using the file name "p47m_1.res" with whatever skin is in this folder. I've now renamed my skin folder "p47m_31" to get round this.
