1) Is a P-51D with four guns historically accurate?
2) Is it worth it?
Perhaps weight is a factor. For me the ability to fire for a longer period of time is attractive. Missing with six is the same as missing with four so.....

In game, for the P51 the step down in firepower is not worth it. OTOH 4 .50s seems just fine in the Fm2, because it can do tracking shots better with it's turn and over-the-nose view. But yeah, 6 is the way to go, being able to kill with a brief window is so important in the pony. Try turning your tracers off, it's done wonders for me in the P-51.

Ah, I see.
Well...tracers are off. But....
Or...and.....
I get snap shots where I see flashes from nose to tail on the bad guy and he still survives. Otoh, I, for whatever reason (mostly my leader roping or me stalking a fixated bandit), usually find myself at D200-400 banging away for several seconds and not hitting a thing.
:headscratch:
Figured if I can't hit any way I may as well save the weight....

If you really do want to take the Pony with four guns, switch to the P-51B and enjoy quadruple perks :old:

And reduced performance. I need the edge so I can run from a B. :bolt:

Less guns only worth it if you would like to turn.
Ponies usually dont want to turn, not even with 190s.

The B actually takes the performance lead when you get very far over 10K. I'd say the majority of action is found below 10K, a significant amount is to be found 10 to 20K especially during weekends/peak hours, with chances of finding bandits diminishing exponentially as you climb above 20K. So choose the plane for the mission perhaps?

No way would I ever take a 51D with 4 guns. Any minuscule gain in performance is more than overwhelmed by the major drop in killing power. A Bravo can be a great change of pace and doesn't have that noticeable of a drop in performance.

15K and below. Mostly LAs, Dora's, and Jug Ms worry me for being run down if I get slow.....and other Runstangs.

I need to work on my gunnery big time then. I wind up with only two guns quite often...having shot over, under, and around everyone.....
-
What is your convergence set to?
-
That's convenient, gunnery is also a thing I need to work on. We'll hit the TA and take turns being the target drone.

Learn to set your converg to 350 or less, I use 325 in 99% of the planes, the only real exception is the 109K.
Get well under 400, take a shot and learn to conserve ammo, if you spray 'n pray - you generally won't hit anything but your ammo counter.
80% of my shots are under 200, 20% were at 400, sometimes just tapping someone at 400 will get them to turn, closing the gap for an easy wing shot.

a spread of rounds from nose to tail is different to a concentrated burst...as in... you peppered the plane and put a lot of holes in it but in differing areas of the plane... if the same amount of rounds hit in a cumulative area it would be a different story ... You can have the same outcome with 20's... the only round I know that has a definitive kill shot on a deflection shot pepper is the 30mm....
-
What is your convergence set to?
Started at max....moved in to 300....400....350....300....2 50....200.....now after trying 500....trying 400.
I was hammering at 300 and 250 because my element leader sets guys up so well......
Can't figure out how to turn on the lead computing gunsight option offline to see lead angles...

I have better success withmtighter conv but darned if I can figure out how to hit any conv setting other than 300. And even then I can't kill squat. Drives me nuts.

Look at flight mode flags in arena settings/environment.
-
You have to enable the lead computing sight in arena settings, it is also enabled in the TA

here's a problem, most people tend to screw around with the Conv, and thats what screws their aim up. Put everything at 325 or 300 or whatever the hell you want, and leave it there. Find a gunsight that works for you (I use the German Revi on every aircraft). Learn to spot your shots.
If any of my old films could actually be viewed I'd send you some, apparently year old films don't work anymore sorry.
If I can shoot down 9 planes in a Hurricane I in an FSO event, you can do the same with any aircraft, you just have to keep your converg and don't sway to far away from your choices. (I mean if you are going to fly a P51D, stick with planes with the 6x 50s configuration).
Reason is the balistics are far different in other aircraft, going to a typhoon with 4x bazookas isn't going to help your aim in a 51. Learn how much damage you can do on snapshots, how much you need to fire before it sets a plane on fire or major chunks comes off.
I always preach, I stick to two aircraft per tour, for example my best tour was flying a P-38J and a C.205. Next tour would be a Ki-84 and a Brewster. The reason I stuck with two like this, was so I wouldn't be bored, yet I had enough flight hours in both aircraft that my aim wouldn't be to shotty.
It takes time to be able to pick a wing and saw it off, eventually you get to that level when you home in your gunnery, I can say it won't happen over night.

Hell I love turning with 109s and 190s, it works out fairly well for the most part and it really worked out in the DGS II Scenario awhile back!

Amount of ammo is a issue :old:
Been flying the Typhoon for a year and then took up the Yak9T with less ammo :old:
Hack is now landing 5 kills in Yak9T
Less ammo means you take a shot when you should :)
Yak9T puts the Narzzies to bed and rightly so :)
-
I always set the convergence to 400 because I found it was the best compromise between optimal range and bullet drop. If you set your convergence low it also affects the arch of the bullets meaning with low convergence you have to pull more lead in a lead shot.

Yes
My deepest apologies :old:
Its an outrage :cry

Sit your 50cals at 350 yards. The added loft really help when you are BnZing at 300+mph.

Thanks all for the input. Will try to factor all of this stuff in.
Did anyone in RL ever fly a "D" with only four guns?
-

I've found LAs and Jugs fairly easy to force out in front when being chased. Those LA wings depart fairly easily. Doras not so much. Definitely my kryptonite and the enemy aircraft I respect the most. The whole "runstang" thing makes me laugh. I always fight and never run but I will always use my speed advantage to extend away if I lose the advantage. I couldn't care less people think I'm running.

I would imagine so
