Supplies are one of the critical part of the war time logistics.
Attack and protection of convoys can be very interesting thing for SEA... So a convoy with multiple merchant ships could be very interesting target
to protect, find and destroy. You can easily find several setups with such a ships: Arctic Convoys, Support of Malta and much more.

:aok This is a good idea and would add more an interesting fold to the strat part of the game. Convoys spawning from naval bases, or somewheres, to resupply bases or strats would make interesting targets. Most of all if escort CVs and destroyers were included in them. On the big maps I could see this as a lot of fun as long as their presence had real impact on resupply.

In Silent Hunter 3 there are also Victory class, C2, C3 cargo. For tankers there are T2 & 3, and a number of smaller merchant ships. These would also be nice in a convoy.
+1 to the idea :aok

we already have supply convoys,trucks,trains

We should get the Gigant as well, and Fuel tankers....... :uhoh

Not anything at sea, just that little boat that goes barely a few kilometers from ports.

Didn't we get transports at one time? I thought for a while HTC was going to add them, I for one would love to see random convoys Spawn on the map, maybe 3 transports and 2 destroyers - it could not be player controlled, however it gives players like me a chance to bring out a TBM or TBD and go hunting.
It has no real value in resupplying other bases, it just drives around the map using AI navigations, the fun is finding them and sinking them. Its like finding the train near HQ.
Thus plus the Beaufighter would be a real treat to tinker with :)

Beaufighter is over rated :D
+1 to supply/troop convoys. More targets and another strat issue to administer and defend.
The Beaufighter would be a great addition too, but that is another topic that is already well covered.

Yes we mostcertantly did, that was a fun FSO hunting the convoys and sinking the ba-jesus out of them...

I'm rather talking about user controlled ships - like a TG that contains:
1. Escort carrier (optional)
2. 3-4 destroyers
3. 20-30 merchant ships
And now we need a beafighter that was very good in hunting them!!!

Yea, this would fit into the idea of seperate CV groups. A regular CV group could have what it has now, but a light cruiser and no LVTs. A landing fleet could consist of an escort CV, 2 heavy cruisers and a few destroyers and use LVTs only with troops. And the convoy could be a resupply fleet, one that can resupply island bases on larger maps, consisting of the ships artik stated.

maybe on maps with lots of water and many small islands, drive a resupply convoy into the port on the island to resupply the whole island? It would make finding and sinking them that much more important when trying to capture fields on the island.
EDIT: Maybe add a 5-10 minute delay to resupply airfields and vehicle bases after the convoy docks at the port to simulate the supplies traveling by train or truck to the bases.

I asked about this years back, I didn't get a response on it. I would be interested in Ship convoys for Island maps, only question is how long it would take to model such ships.

This sounds nice +1 :aok

I think some of the problem is, recently by newer players, a lot of requests for objects are being asked for that allow players to attack things that really won't bite you in any significant way. An example is the strat being distributed now. You can up and knock the strat down to 0%. Then loiter around and kill the train all night long with no pesky red guys to slam your face into the dirt and ouchie your ego.
It's funny how so few wishes are for Hitech to make it easier to get back at the red guys faster after you are shot down. Something like making all airfields 1\2 sector apart. They seem more about asking for ways to avoid the red guys all night long.

This is good

Strange thing how a request for simple Ship Object converted to complex AI things...
I'm rather talking about Special Events were you can sink a simple merchant ship that isn't destroyer, cruiser or carrier...

1.5 sector way need someone to create it :aok I might even up more light figters to get shot down.

This is why I think it would be worth it to place a light carrier or two in with the convoy to give players a chance to defend the convoy if attacked. If nobody launches to defend said convoy, then oh well. How often do people take airfields completely un contested? There is nothing HiTech can implement to force people to fight.

the funny thing is the liberty ship I took a tour of had a 5" on the stern, a 2 or 3"(?) on the front, 40mm, and 20mm's all over the place. I think they are underestimating merchant ships. their tbm is still going to get wasted. perhaps they should stick to the port barges.. they don't shoot back at all :)

Slow moving convoys would give subs something to attack when they're added (as subs are not likely to ever be able to catch the current fast moving task forces).
-
HT said in another thread somewhere he wanted to add supply convoys.
And yes, my father was a 20mm gunner on a merchant ship in WWII after his stint in the infantry. They do bite back. It was U-boats that were the worry but HT has said he wants to add those too one day.

Would the subs be like CV groups, and have their path controlled by players, or like PT boats that are fully controlled by a player?
