The Stalingrad winter terrain is now uploaded for all to use under the name 'stalinw'

That looks amazing!
Post some screenshots (please)!

I don't know if it maters but the grid numbering is not standard. Usually it is x.y and you have y.x.
Looks like you used the actual topology to make the terrain –-- or at least the map. What is the scale?

I didn't know there was a standard for grid numbering but Ill change it to the norm asap. I did use the actual topology for both the terrain and the map. As for scale, on the 256 map its pretty much 1:1

Very cool!

Very nice! :aok

looks great!

Thank you.
Question. Are 256 maps playable in FSOs and scenarios or would I be better off converting it into 512 to get it used in the SEA? I really wanted this map to be playable in both the AvA and SEA. That was the reasoning for the over sized strats.
-
We do not use 256 maps. 512 is the standard for the SEA
The map and all it's source files would have to be submitted to the Terrain Team for testing.
Nice looking map

As far as I know, all maps (no matter the size) are compiled as 512x512 for in-game use. It's just that the clipboard map and the "flyable terrain" for smaller maps is at the center. So on every clipboard map, the very center square is grid location 10,10.

Alright, I'll get to work on a 512 version for the SEA. Btw why does the terrain team have to test it? Doesn't the uploaded make sure there are no bugs in the terrain?
-
Hey Larry.
The reason behind all SEA terrains having to go thru the Terrain Team is that we are responsible for the stability of the SEA servers as it relates to the terrains.
What I mean by that is, there are things that can not done right in a terrain that can cause the SEA servers to crash, which is not good when you have an event going on.
What works offline or in a custom arena won't always work in an arena when you have 200-400 players in it.
There are certain guidelines we go by to be sure every thing works properly.
Now does that mean we always get it right and nothing ever goes wrong? Absolutely not, we make mistakes just like any one else does,
but we can usually in most cases fix a problem on the fly and keep an event from being canceled.
As far as the uploader goes, it does not catch all possible errors that can cause an arena crash.
Hope that answers your question some, if not let me know.
And btw good looking terrain.

Beautiful map - looking at it on AvA...
Questions:
1. How did you created the terrain and the water? (What tools have you used) - MakeAHMap or something else
2. How did you placed so many building - what type of object have you used?
-
Artik, I was in the process of making this map about five years ago before my computer crashed and I lost everything for it. It was about two months ago that I found one of my old flash drives that I forgot I had a back up of the elevation and water files on. What I did with the water back then was zoom in with Google maps and screen shot a 20x20 mile section and put them together in photoshop then just trace over it to get all the water. (Took me forever) I'm sure there was an easier way but I thought that was a good idea. As for the cities I used the tiles that make up the city complex start in the MAs I just used different pieces that looked like they fit together.

Just for the record this could be done using MakeAHMap automatically:
Take a look on a clipboard map: http://cppcms.com/files/makeahmap/images/stalingrad.png
-
Yes, but since I found those files on the flash drive from back in 2009 all I had to do was put everything together.

Not near is beautiful..
-
Yeah, not near as many little lakes and tributaries. Artik: did you set a minimum cutoff for water feature size or does the database your program worked from not include much wetland? To be fair, the Google Maps data that Larry worked from does seem optimistic regarding the amount of water in the Volga wetlands if you compare map vs satellite, but your map seems to underestimate the wetlands.
