Yeah! He ran as #1 Read the Friggin Rules.  He had #7 Cheating Bastage by a nose in the first turn. #2 Hijack This took the lead until 3 Pages of Crap put him behind A Lock.  Skuzzy and PNG smoked 12 Hour Rule up the back stretch.  #8 Windows whined and crashed in turn 3 and PNG fell down hard on Political Poster and I Got Muted.  #3 was stride by stride with Another Thread until Ban Hammer fell in turn #4 and Flamebaiting took the lead.  #10 Punted Topic came from the back of the pack and took the win.  Skuzzy came in behind #4 Backseat Moderator.

It was one hell of a race really.

Played large on California Chrome and smiled all the way to the cash-in line.

Up $40 is better than down any amount... especially if it was worth the time and cost to go :aok

The cost was covered by our winnings. :)

I had never been before.  I can say I went now.

The only thing that was a hassle was getting the Wife's hat there and back, without it being crushed.

Never saw so many hat boxes on a plane in my entire life.

It's awesome that you had a good time and enjoyed yourselves.   THAT is what is all about. :aok

The lowest paying wagers are on favored horses with the lowest odds.

The highest paying wagers are on longshots, especially under "sloppy" track conditions when longshots rock.  Had you had wagered more money on the horses to place or show in the final Derby race, your $40 could have easily been $4,000+ based on your monitary wager and the odds at post time.  If you had FUN, then it was all worth it then.

The BEST bets are trifectas (Win, Place, Show), with the best being BOXED trifecta bets where any of the top 3 in a race can come in in any 1-2-3 order and still payout huge.

It was a blast turning around a $4.4Million a year track gaming venue and building it into a $16.6Million a year venue--making $3.1Million in profit on a simple holiday weekend, based (especially) on the customer service (written & taught syllabus) that Wynn, Harrahs, and Trump properties failed to impliment.  But then again, what do I know about running a multi-million dollar business focusing on customer service.

We actually won a boxed trifecta Friday on the 10th race.  Unfortunately, the favorite got bet on so heavily (34% of all the bets, in a $3.2 million dollar pool) the odds dropped to 1:1 before the betting locked.  Made the odds no more than if we had bet to "show" on any other race.

We bet a boxed trifecta on Sataurday, and missed it by one horse.  Only a half a length too.

We did a lot of mixing with our bets, just for giggles.  Some paid, some did not.  Overall it was blast.

EXCELLENT!

The "boxed" wager is simple, inexpensive, and gives you options!  Odd...some track regulars don't understand it or use the option.

WTG!  It's all about FUN!

Oh yeah.  There are a ton of options and many different mixes you can do.  Typically, we had 3 or 4 bets per race.  Any one win would cover the loss of the others, but, on occasion, we hit 2, or more and woohoo!

We are were not looking to get rich.  We were just there to have fun and we did.  It really does suck you into the race when you have some money on it.  Heck, we also participate in some pools in our box.  Did not win any of them, but it fun trying to figure out what to pick and get the money in before they closed the bets.

Ii remember during Racing Festival of the South about ten years ago, a very nice little old lady -- in her 80's at least and fortifying herself with a walker on a very crowded apron in front of the owner's and trainer's benches.  Her hair was in disarray in the wind, her tatterned and worn tennis balls on the walker legs almost falling off, but the Margarita in the plastic cup never tipped.

About 1/2 way through a full mile race she bumps the walker up to the edge of the wall...bumping "darned kids" (20 somethings) out of the way and she began to scream..."USE DA WHIP!!!  Beat that pig --WHOOP him!!  BEAT THAT PIG"

At the last 1/8th pole she had the walker off the ground and was smacking it against the brick wall...."USE DA WHIP!!  BEAT THAT PIG!!!".  Her horse slid from 4th to 1st in the last furlongs.

Race over.  Handfulls of torn paper Amtote tickets went into the air, and just as many went into pockets for redemption.   She's licking her chops and kissing her bet ticket.  "How much you win?" I asked.

"Twenty-two (expletive) dollars." she replied with a huge gap-tooth grin.  I had no reply.   She dinged my shin with her walker and said "out the way...I got a ticket to cash!"

Ah.  The track.  :)
