Title: Local USS Indianapolis survivor tells story

He had a local road bridge named after him. The odds of having a living Indianapolis survivor near me are pretty slim. <S>

    An interesting aside........

        The captain of the Indianapolis, Charles McVay III, survived the ship's sinking. Following the war, he was brought up for court-martial, the only ship's commander in World War II to face such allegations regarding their ship's sinking. The commander of the Japanese submarine that launched the fateful torpedoes testified at the hearing that any evasive actions by the Indianapolis would have be fruitless. McVay's sentence was later remitted by Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, who restored McVay to active duty. McVay retired in 1949.
