Saw the 1979 show live from Barum/St. Dioynis, Niedersachsen, BRD Germany. It was awesome. I had never seen a music show like that and it was phenominal. Some of the bands sucked--others, I wondered why they weren't household names in America yet. It was EURO-pop at it's finest. Enjoyed it. Never realized it was a yearly event until my handler explained it to me.

This is still one of my favorites

Everything an American or anyone needs to understand about Eurovision is this: Poland!
This is their performance costume:

They can't sing at all. They went through semifinals.
-
Everyone remember we dont want to win it :)
We want the lowest score :rofl
How daft is this, we have Irish presenters Terry Wogan and Graham Norton representing the UK :rofl
Graham Norton gets proper drunk and laughs at everyone
The colonials will not understand the Eurovision it does not have advertisments every 12 minutes :airplane: :rofl

One of my favorites of all time and a deserved win for Sweden in 2012: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nJcmLMb5to
The amount of money spent on this contest is pretty insane. Even Azerbaijan spent hundreds of millions of Dollars on the event back in 2012. It's like the Olympics of music contests...

It more political than musical.
-
Only as "political" as the voting public wants it to be. Democracy in action.

Are we about to witness the first Austrian victory since Udo Jürgens?

I expect Ukraine will get a lot of sympathy votes this year. Don't expect much love for Russia...
Austria's Conchita is not very popular in Russia or other countries where anti-gay sentiments are commonplace. She (I think she identifies herself as a she?) is certainly one of the most "original" contestants!
-
Is that bloke gay?
I have watched that pre show polish video its should be banned its an outrage :old:

ABBA was the last band voted for purely on the music.

Hopefully with this win people in Eastern Europe / Russia can learn to tolerate individual freedoms more so.
Changing the world one beard at a time.
Congrats to France for finishing last with 2 points (wins zack's competition) with their Moustache song it was good and kind of ironic, the theme being wanting facial hair but not having it. :lol

Interesting detail: While the song, almost as expected, did not get any points from Russia and Belorussia, it came out in the televotes in these countries on #3 and #4 respectively. Only because of their Juries (massively downvoting) it did not get any points from them in the end :old:

Bahhh! transvestites. Been there seen that. Israel already won the Eurovision with a feather wearing transgender, that goes by the ridiculous name "Dana International". Sounds like the name of a bank more than a person...

The beard is a new twist I must admit. The only step down from that is a transvestite in spandex, showing an erection instead of a cameltoe.

it appears that doctoring votes is the order of the day. :old:

The idea of a political vote is overplayed. Ireland won it seven times and most people in Europe probably wouldn't know where we are or think we're part of the UK. You can hardly say Austria was voted in by it's neighbours. Although in this case it might have been a bloc gay vote! :old: Netherlands got a lot of votes because the song was good and was a bit unlucky to run into the bearded lady.
Of course friendly neighbours do vote for each other. Ireland gave the UK eight undeserved points the most any country gave to it. The song was rubbish just like ours was. We didn't even make it into the final.
Anyone would think we didn't want to win Eurovision. :noid When you think about look at the countries that have won in recent years. Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Serbia, Finland etc. You would be hard pushed to name an internationally famous singer or group that came from any one those countries recently. Then you look at the UK and Ireland. Lots of good singers, groups and songwriters to choose from in both countries. Yet we send bad songs every year. Songs that are doomed to failure from the start. If you're familiar with the comedy series 'Father Ted' there's one episode where the TV people, broke from winning Eurovision too much, fix the Irish competition so they won't win again by sending Ted to sing 'My Lovely Horse'. Not nearly as funny as sending a puppet turkey which Ireland did a few years ago. Turkeys in every sense of the word.
-
The thing about Eurovision is that it's a song writer's contest. That means it is irrelevant if one country have lots of great artists since any already published song is disqualified to participate. The performers themselves do not need to even be from the country they represent, only the song writer. Canadian singer Celine Dion has represented Switzerland for example.

Seems some Russki politicos have actually lost their minds due to the Eurovision outcome, now want to withdraw their country from the contest and set up their own "traditional Russian values" contest:
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27404406
In similar news, I had the misfortune to be able to watch the RT (Russia Today) news channel last week. Never, ever seen such propagandistic drivel.
-
And your country does not do propaganda drivel :old:
Has Korea invaded New Jersey yet :rofl
-
I'm unaware of any Australian Propaganda Drivel, other than the NSFW boys at Housos, you stooge (they like pies, just like you):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTWQEsjesPs (Yeah mate, it's NSFW.)
FWIW, I saw Russia Today whilst in the U.K. Do you pay for that crap?
Have a pie, stooge.

But the pies, my god, can't you boys just leave them out of it?
Also, don't blame that Bieber thing on us. He's Canadian, for god's sake.

Pie? Pie? I would serve thee up a nice pie, warm, steaming, and fragrant.
