At least Jim is ok. So sad to see it happen, it breaks my heart in a way after I spent so much time with that bird.

Take comfort that pilot is ok and plane will fly again :aok
 Oz
-
It's all about Jim, in the grand scheme of things, the plane is inconsequential.
-
Ground loop? The notoriety didn't come from nowhere it seems...
-
Glad he is Ok but with 3 runways to use why was he landing with a 30kt crosswind?
-
Good to see he is Ok, the damage will give the builder/rebuilders something to do, sure it will fly again.
-
Plane looks fixable... but not cheap. Glad the pilot is OK... Hope someone kicks him in the nut sack for fudging it up though (if he hasn't done it himself already).

Let's not go beating the pilot up before we know the cause of the accident. Sometimes things happen that leaves even Chuck Yeager with few options.

airshows disasters waiting to happen

Luckily I got to see her fly twice this year. This is from the first time:

If I recall right this plane has been crashed before, I believe Jim's father was one piloting it then and he perished in the crash. Jim then rebuilt the corsair and has been flying it ever since.

Pets are an inevitable tragedy.

That sucks.
He is off the runway by just a few meters and it counts as a ditch :(
-
Glad the pilot is ok. Nice that the plane is, relatively, ok.

Our good friend, Jim Tobul, owner and pilot of the F-4U Corsair, "Korean War Hero" had a crash on landing at Atlanta's Peachtree Dekalb Airport today (Friday, May 16). The airplane was in a 30-knot direct crosswind that turned into a quartering tailwind on landing and the airplane flipped over, damaging the prop and vertical stabilizer. Jim got out OK! I spoke with him on the phone tonight and he said that all his safety gear worked properly, that his helmet got pretty banged up (better that than his head) and that he was able to get out because he lands and takes off with the canopy open. No fire. The airplane is going to be trucked to Colorado for repair; parts are already being pulled for a June 1st start. Jim says he'll have "Korean War Hero" back in the air this year!
comment:
I was in the pattern with Jim and landed right in front of him. I had to wrestle my 182 to a landing. The wind & turbulence were mean, to say the least. I turned off the runway to see the results of his mishap. I can say it is understandable he had difficulty in those winds with a Corsair. I was almost in panic until we saw him standing outside the plane. Glad your OK Jim. Airplanes can be fixed. Friends are the precious things to have.

Thanks for sharing that Milo. I have been busy with work and had not seen it.
It really is a blessing that Jim made it through this accident. I can't fathom the thoughts going through his mind at that instance. When they go, they go quick.

He should have known that toejam happens just when you fly a perk plane.

I disagree, by the time we get around to knowing the cause we may not even feel like beating them up anymore. Immediately following the incident he was heard saying, "I meant to do that".

Jim "latrobe" Tobul attempting to taxi above 25 mph....stick to your freak'n 109 please!
-
OK, OK... Just a light tap in the nads then... If he could do it to himself I'm sure he would.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say his insurance rates may be increased when it's time to renew his policy.
