I was walking in the park with my dog yesterday when I heard a funny helicopter like sound Ive never heard before. Two V-22 Ospreys flew over head at about 1,000' going like Hell, far faster then any Helicopter Ive ever seen. Ive never seen one before, on the ground or in the air. I have no idea what they were doing here.
OK, my wife just told me Obama was in town. I guess thats it. Very impressive air craft. A sound unlike any other Ive heard before.

That they are. Loud as all get out though.

We had a pair fly over work about a month ago. It was definitely a distinctive sound. They look awesome flying. I've only ever seen a static display at an airshow. Very amazing to see them fly at low altitude.

A few days ago i had a Ju-52 flying low over the mall I was shopping at. Immediately recognized the distinct sound and looked up.
Then I looked around... nobody cared, not even the young boys. :bhead
I almost had the urge to scream at the people "LOOK THERE! A legend! Don't you hear that sound? You never hear or see something like this! The plane there is more than 70 years old"
But I knew better ;)

I've never been on one either, but I've seen them up close a few times, as well as heard/seen them fly overhead. A very interesting aircraft, with a lot of capability IMO. Much faster than helo's, holds a lot more than most helos, other than perhaps the Chinooks (close) or the CH53s. I think for its job, getting troops from assault ships to the beach, and supporting them, it's a fantastic idea due to the speed and versatility, as well as payload. Seeing the thing all folded up for storage, then the wing rotating 180 degrees, the engines then rotating, then rotors unfolding...it looks like a real world Transformer, and it's hard to believe something so squashed together and folded up can fly in moments. Seeing F18's refuel for one as well - sort of mind bending.
I've read about some of the armaments they're trying out on them as well, not just the defensive guns, but various cannon systems which are belly/chin mounted in steerable pods with IR targeting systems, giving the V22 the ability to not only defend itself, but prep the landing positions in denied areas. Before this, due to the design and having large engine in the way on both sides when hovering, firing defensive guns was only really capable out the rear, which is kind of not the place you need to look/shoot when incoming to a landing zone, or anywhere for that matter. I'll find the video and post it.
edit - video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVoksf_2y5k#t=111 Some serious pew pew p-otential. 3,000 rpm and over 5000 rnds carried typically, with more able to be reloaded while in flight without RTB.
I really like the Osprey, I wish it would get more sales and support from NATO countries, the capability it gives over helos is a pretty impressive jump, even for the $.

I used to live near Bell Helicopter in Hurst. There is a small landing strip at Trinity & Greenbelt behind the main plant. Sometimes you would see 3 or 4 of them come in to this tiny strip just a few feet over the road. They have a very distinct sound.

I went to Southport once and it smelt of petrol :old:
Then a spitfire and Lancaster flew over :)

As far as I know there are only a very few JU-52s still flying. I'd love just to see one displayed.
Once, the day before an air show, a P-51, a Spit fire, a P-38, and a F-22 were flying in a perfect box in circles around downtown. Some people were looking but had no idea what exactly they were seeing and what it meant. Kinda saddened me.

If you're lucky and she comes to an air show near you, you might get to buy a ride.

Yeah, the old girl has to work for a living you know... You could say she's a working girl.

We need the JU-52 in the game. Often I'll put in DVDs of Stalingrad or Valkyrie just to watch the scenes with the JU-52. I used to love flying it in Battleground Europe and I think, for some odd reason, its a beautiful airplane. It was also one of the most important airframes of the war.

In some strange way it really is beautiful. I think its beauty lies in its looks of raw functionality rather than any artistic value.

We live on a sky lane for low flying training. A set came over last year. So loud it shook the house a bit. When the F 18s flew over and made a hard turn, you see the color of their helmets sometimes.
Budget cuts backs must have slowed training down. I use to see them a couple of times a week but now it is rare.

Sorry, I am in IL. Prez owns a house here and is an occasional visitor.
