And no I don't mean in an obsessive, Midway-esque way, but who were some of the guys that you first began to notice as good pilots and wanted to learn from when you began flying (whether in AW, WB, or AH)?
I vividly remember the first person I ever encountered in-game was Greebo, but that literally being my first sortie I had no idea who he was in the community or the skilled flyer he was. On topic, the very first pilots that I respected and wanted to emulate were WingZero, busa01, and nozman00. I had a fascination with someone who remained dedicated to one particular airframe, and each of them exhibited that to a certain degree of success with busa and WZ in the Niki, and nozman in the Ki-84. With all of them being Bishops I would often ride along with them and get to see first person how they fought. Looking back at some of their statistics, they definitely don't stand out as exceptional flyers, but in my first few months, they were who I wanted to fly as well as one day.
This little thought all arose today, when I was thinking out of the blue who that Ki-84 pilot was I used to fly with a bunch. I remembered busa and WingZero in the Niki, but couldn't for the life of me think of the Hayabusa pilot. After a quick search of the stats though I quickly found nozman00, and it seemed like a blast from the past just seeing that name. It seems like just yesterday I was upping a Ki-84 and trying to be the samurai of the sky back when I started at age 12.

Moot in the 152 :)
I hope to be the next slayer in that thing... It's a difficult act to follow though :bhead
-
Blkjack6 will always be my FPH, taught me how to bomb and how to barrel roll.

ehhh didn't who start the term, can't indulge with this acronym
Hayabusa = Ki-43
Falcon, I believe
:old: 931 kills in the Pony last tour to 23 deaths, I think you're better than them. lol
wheredahell you find so many targets, I couldn't have died that many times if I wanted to last month

In my case, it was an entire squad; The Damned. I 1st flew with them in Air Warrior/Macintosh followed by AW3 prior to it's demise. After a brief stint in WB's, I found AH1 and shortly after, The Damned arrived...lots of them. Other mega-squads at that time were Arabian Knights, LTAR's, MAW's and a few more whose names escape me.
Top Damned sticks were Fool, Ren, Dano, TC (still here) Coach (still here occasionally) Altogether there were 3 wings of 32 each. Sunday squad night was a heady experience...I miss it greatly.
"Damned if we do, no fun if we don't."

LYNX and the BlindBats
(Sounds like a Rockband :lol)

who were some of the guys that you first began to notice as good pilots and wanted to learn from when you began flying (whether in AW, WB, or AH)?
In AW:
Bug showed me what a lead turn was. Whole new worlds appeared before my eyes.
HR taught me to fly looking at the enemy, not at the instrument panel.
Drano taught me flaps usage on 109Gs.
In AH:
Grits taught me that P-38s and Corsairs work much better if you don't pull hard Gs when you drop the flaps.
Slash27, Fork and 1Duke1 taught me how much fun it is to fight your squad mates while talking to them on a common VOX channel.
Jaeger1 showed me that it's just as much fun to talk to someone who isn't your squad mate while you're fighting him.

Ghosth .. I think that is how his name was spelled. I encountered his MA name in-game, and when we went to the TA he revealed himself to be a trainer. Spent many hours with him learning to fly. :salute
-
Your First "FPH"s?
And FPH means F... P... H...?
-
vOid and crew were my first FPH's, in Falcon 4 I flew with some top rated pilots, we had an amazing community and I couldn't just pick out one pilot. vOid and AgentOne (I forget his name, was a muppet for a long time) took the time to teach me in the DA the art of flying the 109K.
I never really got comfortable with the ballistics on the 109k, but ended up flying most comfortable in the C.205 and Ki-84. I think we spent about 5 hours in the DA one summer just going round and round in different aircraft.
vOid could always beat me in just about any ride in a 1vs1, however he told me to not be discouraged, and pointed out I shined when I was in FSO and Scenario events where I topped the leaderboards many times. I give all credit to them.
-
Yourself TJ - i remember meeting you in TT when i first started and was amazed!
Bruv & Kazaa!
Bighorn, Mar & nrshida - spent so much time in the TA with these guys and learnt so much!!
and Grizz Just because!
-
Never had FPH's, but I did have a group of fellas that took me under their wing and taught me how to be the Pig I am today. :salute to Syko, Skullman (RIP brother), ShelbyWu, Bustr, Modo, JackRipr, Sol75, Bentnail, Amax, Jolly, 1BdSpade.

And FPH means F... P... H...?
"Fighter Pilot Hero." It's a Midway/Who/Theta term :rofl
Hayabusa = Ki-43
Ki-84 is a Hayate, you are correct, my mistake.
-
It's a Midway:rofl
Careful or you'll stir the dead. :devil
-
xcom - almost impossible to kill. He does not fly AH2 any more :(
-
I don't remember who I first wished I would be like, but the first year it took me to become a decent pilot I never had a skilled pilot to fly with, I was very often a loner.
I had friends and people I knew, there definitely were some better within the country but I never bothered to ask anyone, especially no one from another country because I was a hard core Bish. :)
I eventually got extremely frustrated with losing 262's and switched to 109's from spit8's, Niki's and Brews because of the ENY gave many perks. :)
I only watched a bunch of Youtube vids to get an idea how to fly and learned from them. Unfortunately though, Latrobe's tutorials were never around yet so I never knew about what basic ACM was till they came out. I just learned to fly by watching and observing ACM through videos.
It wasn't easy. :lol
Edit: The most I ever received from anyone else were tiny tips on a few things.
-
Oldman, Storch, VWE, N7, Larry, Tbarone! Great Guys to learn from, awesome in planes!
-
Zensen of Duxford RAF
Then I saw a ton of these videos by some crazy guy who's handle is Vudu15 it was a combination of the two into one which I aspire too become.
-
Probably Dutchguy. I flew with him and respected his flying style and demand for perfection.
-
Jonah taught me some stuff, then Bunnies, Krup and Irish. No midway style FPH-ism though, but liked their style pretty much.
-
Nobody.. I would say that would be me. :D Ok, Ok, I guess the OP, since I'm not even sure he's human.. :headscratch:
-
The dude that helped me the most in the game when I was starting out was Badcore. If I thought he was going to read this I wouldn't have admitted it. He'd get all mushy and stuff and creep me out.
-
Alpha81,Mace,AKAK,Shuffler and Fester
-
JBKID and Trix. I wonder how many remember those names!
-
Daddy= and his P-51 from WB 2.7.
Great guy and ran a really good Pony course as well.
-
Fudmukkr...a great 4Hog pilot and all around great guy, nrshida...he took me under his wing and helped me, otherwise I'd not be playing AH2. There are other great influences and great people in the game, my entire squad, RedBull, Dolby, Barkhorn, the list could go on, this game has great people playing it, and some who are no longer around but are sorely missed.
-
AW AOL Days: I wanted Heebee to show me how he kept blowing up my Spit with his 190. I had to join the Muskies to find out.

Moot in the 152 :)
He was another one of the early ones I really respected for flying such a difficult plane in such an aggressive way. Unfortunately I've just never been a 152 person (much less a Luftweenie) and have probably logged around an hour in it in 7 years. I didn't get to fly with him much since he was rarely, if ever, flying as a Bishop and I was real "chess-piece loyal" back then.
As I progressed into KOTH and dueling, I started fighting some of the bigger names and met some of the people that I still consider friends today. I think my first encounter was with Bighorn and this guy who kept making fun of him for his Buick. Dedalot, that's the one. :) Batfink is another who I had the good fortune of coming across. He has always been one of the top pilots, and easily one of the nicest guys that I've gotten to fly and die with over the years. The only thing I hated when I was learning is that he would take it easy on me, as he always tried to make it an interesting fight. Just shoot me down already! :furious
-
Wilbuz. He will be my FPH forever and always. The best there ever was, the best there every will be.
-
I remember when I was just starting I kept running into the AoM's and I was just blown away both literally out of the sky and over how well they flew and killed everything in the sky! I remember times when everyone on range would be complaining because Grizz and kappa were winging together in the area in 262s. I watched the Muppets closely whenever they were in the area since they flew exactly how I wanted to fly, only they were way better at it :o
I never would have guessed I'd be a part of AoM back then. Very fun squad with some excellent stick!
Today I think my FPH is RedBull because he cheats... I mean he's good! :P
-
I remember when I was just starting I kept running into the AoM's
I remember in 2005 running into Fester for the first time, he made a few passes in a 109K, I pulled a few tricks and never got a single shot off, thought it was bull. It was the other 109K's hovering around that made me worry, but fact is I got handed.
At that time there were quantity in the MA, 9 of 10 were simply unskilled, running in fester would be like running into Bruv or most in TopGun.
It certainly made me want to get better, I just wish I knew where Agent went.
-
I just wish I knew where Agent went.
He ain't gone. He's just tending to real life for a while.
-
I have to say Spatula...he helped me straight off and he was a trainer so that was a big help for me ...probably due to being a kiwi..gotta look after the bro's ya know..
the person who shaped me most I would say was agent360.... low slow flying 109..always handed me my butt however he taught me early on throttle control and stall fighting
Very Honorable mentions are people like Silat, snaphook, hmmm there are more but those two stand out when I try come up with names off the bat. Those two taught me arena etiquette...both slightly different but the same overall... silat..to enjoy the game and be nice....snaphook more for engagement morals
Both and many others offered the same thing but those two stood out to me from my start in AH
-
Oh man there's a bunch for me. Yep Snaphook, Paws, BluKitty, Skyrock, Lynx, Shawk, SkatSr, TwinBoom, Creton........
-
For me it was Bruv and the guys from The Few, id see them barrow into our Bish hordes and come out with 5 or 6 kills each and i was like how the .... can they do that. After a bit we,d had them blowing apart my old squad in the MA even though we outnumbered them 3 to 1 i decided to ask to join.
Here i am today nowere near the level of the other guys in my squad but vastly improved mostly due to Pervert, MickyD and Bruvs patience while kicking my butt over and over again in the DA and TA.
From other squads people that stand out are Dolby (always a good scrap ending mostly in my death), Latrobe (very humble all round good guy who makes me feel silly 9/10 times and totally humbled the other 1/10 lol), Redbull (always been a good fella, great in the K4 and very helpful whenever weve gone off to the DA) and DrBone( has kicked my butt in so many different rides at different times when ive had all the advantages to start).
Wish id of been around a few years prior to my joining to have fought against some of the older guys that others still talk about to this day.

When I first started playing I spent months in H2H. The ones I wanted to emmulate were Yaws, Win75th, olly75th.
When I get to the online play, I spent a good portion of my time in "old" DA. I quickly realized the difference. Phish (2bighorn) surprised no one mentioned him, became my FPH, along with Batfink, (both were so kind to help amd duel me all the time) stang, and morpheous in the MA.
So glad I am apart of the AoM and get to fly with batty, and the rest of the gang all the time now. Wish 2bighorn would come back.
-
the first guy I respected ingame .....no he was never a FPH I do not have any of those......I actually did not like him...thought he was all mouth...ran it all the time on 200
Skyrock.....he happen to run his mouth to me one DAy of course the DA challenge came up.....
I figure I would smoke him in the DA...(this was within my first 2 months of playing) :rofl
he owns me...every fight...Hurri vs F4U.....I was a bit humbled I figured he was gonna run his mouth ....
I am serious...NOT once did he gloat or talk smack...he asked me if my stall limiter was on.....it was ...told me to shut that crap off(never been on since)....helped me in a lot of ways with my stick and ACM and was a great respectable person. ( I know crazy right :rofl)
the second one I respected in game was Agent360...
Agent was the man....I flew the Hurri2C back then.....Never HOed I always went for the saddle....out comes a K4....TURN fighting my hurri...... :O
he was determined he would kill me.....he would die over and over...never once complain....or whine....always respectful ....
and he made me work my bellybutton off....it took every trick except HOIng him to be able to kill him....my hand would hurt :O
a master in the K4 TnBing a hurri.......awesome.
He was in the Muppets..so was Skyrock..... I new I would be a Muppet....They were..... ALL of them..... fighting men....... backing up their smack talk MoFo's :rock

KOOL was always cool as a cucumber... on vox he sounds like a commercial airline pilot

Et37 in his gental nature, taking in noobs like me and taking the time to pass on his knowledge as for pilots who's skill I wish to emilate
Akak __ accuracy
Latrobes__ understanding and implication of acm
Dolbys 1v1 and 2v1 and 3v1 ect ability to supply damage.
And to beat doc72ch in a duel always a challenging fight.

THE BUG.
-
Bighorn, Leviathn, Fester, Wildthng, Sniper, ManeTMP... these were the guys/girl I wanted to be able to fly like...
-
I was hooked from the airwarrior on, my handle was Zoom flew solo for a bit and got slaughtered relentlessly lol The Motleyaces took me under there wing i learned fighting from MotXo and MotRx learned to bomb from MotCo ..... also want a lot from xbrit and Filth.... there was a lot of great pilots
-
Deth7, waaaaaay back in AirWarrior. I attacked him and was dead in 15 seconds. Came back with more E and lasted 20 seconds. Came back with more alt and was dead in 20 seconds. Came back while he was busy to pick him and was dead in 5 seconds. Came back noe to sneak up on him and was dead in 10 seconds. Then he told me I was too stupid to quit trying and asked if I wanted to join the Pigstompers. I had been flying awhile already and thought I was a hot stick, I wasn't even a cold twig.
I miss those days because I miss the guys that no longer play. Everything is better here at Aces High though.
-
Whomever called me "KY-Jelly" in my first furball..... Even though laughter erupted on range, I will never forgot the joking (still somewhat respectful) that followed from my country-men.
As for names? A few stand out which are long-term players, but I also got alot of help from players I haven't seen since.
FB's helped me out alot when i started, each squaddie helped me learn those critical nuances to bombing that would have taken a serious investment of time to research on my own, so thank you FreeBirds!
-
My FPH would be Corky/+Tiff (for you old Airwarriors)... Not only does Corky have a great attitude, but this great attitude transcends Aces High regardless of the circumstances he has to experience.
If you're talking Aces High ability, who cares? No one should take this place that seriously! Ok, ok, ok... I've seen him die countless times and never whines or rants about it, he definitely leads by example.
-
Have to agree with Del on that one definitely Corky for his approach to the game and everything in general, absolute great guy...but if you get tasked as his wingie for a scenario just know your are going to be extremely busy trying to follow his flight path :lol . Learned alot from getting blown out of the sky by bunnies when I first started and Crabby clubbing me repeatedly in the DA. As for people I have learned something from, that's a long long list Dolby, FBcrabby, FBLazy1, Bunnies, Agent360, Latrobe, SFox, FBBob, Silat, Creton, and of course Redbull ( Now if I can figure out how to counter that damn "Freedom Dive" :aok just about anyone I have flown with or against I have tried to learn something from.

Back in beta was a guy named Wardog who let me ride around with him in his pony showing me the ropes, learned a lot from that guy.
-
Mine was TnDep without a doubt. :)
-
Ghosth - saved me from ground looping my planes in the TA. He got me off the ground
Rodent57 - bugged him for hours in the TA when Ghosth wasn't around. He flew a 1A with drops and I flew a 16. I never beat him.
Rowdy1, Davski and MUZIK were the early teachers of the mechanics of the game...views, gunnery, E and who was who (JOACH1M and I started the same week)
MugZ - Never forget this guy...wish he were still here. Taught me enough ACM to get by (then he left) and the vision drills to help my failing SA (I need to do those again, lol)
Dodger and Sunbat spent hours getting me ready for my first bracket against Batfink (I lost miserably like I still do)
Batfink - wore my bellybutton out in the bracket and then flew with me for a couple of hours helping me figure some things out
JUGgler - ran into him one night while he was lone patrolling in a D11 over a port base. I 200 smacked talked him. I died in a Spit 9 about 300 times over a 2 hour period and he invited me to the DA to help me.
I bet most of them don't remember any of this. As tough as this game is, its not surprising we do and they don't.
Great guys, one and all. :salute
Edit: There was one more...Fringe. I think he was a Med student or claimed to be. He was the best I ever saw fly a 38...was prolly Del, lmao!!!

Fringe is/was for sure his own person, and a deadly pilot. The thing I most fear from 38 drivers is not any ACM necessarily, but the fact that the best have laser-like aim. IIRC Fianna (another good 38 driver) was one of the first people I ever dueled. I remember him so well because he told me that there was a forum for the game, and also introduced me to the SAPP crowd. I used to be a 38 dweeb for a time, and will for sure give it some time again in a couple of days.

Training wheels...it was Ghosth...patient and pleasant <<S>>
Then it was 6 months in the TA with Bighorn, constant fights low, high, defensive , offensive...he did this all by text too, no voice comms on his side of the computer. That was ten years ago now....wow has time flown by
no idea if Bighorn is even on here anymore and if so under what name but if he does <<S>> and Thanks!

He's around. He makes his obligatory Muppet appearance in the TA about every 3 years. The Muppet rumor generator has it that Bighorn broke a promise to Dedalos that BH would come back if the "Mad Greek" came back.
Well, the Mad Greek has returned and Bighorn has not kept his promise....or maybe BH is playing hard-to-get....the good ones do that you know.

It was back in 2003, 04 Anyone remember SysProbe? :headscratch:
He joined my aircraft a few times and gave me a lot of help when I really needed it. :salute
Some say I still need help. :joystick:

Not sure I'd use "hero" but the first group I came across that really wowed me were the Twin Engine Devils. Fester, kappa, and Lazer laying waste to everything in P-38s. Those guys were really a cut above. Still are :salute

When I first started AH years ago LYNX was the one person I remember being so great that everyone would try to gang up on him to kill him. I was lucky enough to catch him 1 v 1 and knew I was done for. I put up a better fight than I thought I could but in the end he killed me anyway. He was always nice every time I ran across him (minus the always killing me part.) Recently my FPH's have been Del, Soulyss, Mir, and everyone else in the 80th Bomber group. Great bunch of guys and I always enjoyed dying to them and trying to learn "how the "f" did he do that?!?!" :salute
-
Ahh Joey, it was never taking it easy, more playing with my food, I'm a cat at heart :D
Also, I saw my progression as being abstract not linear. If I always fly the same way I may win, but I wont learn anything new. So I always used to try to do something new just to see what would happen. Also I would often get some kind of perverse pleasure out of saying to myself 'can I do this and then still keep control of the fight?' Always trying to keep it fresh, for myself mostly. In your case, it wasn't long before I became the mouse and you the cat. Prolonging the fight also helps newer guys to learn faster, I think.
There have been so many awesome sticks I have had the pleasure of flying with over the years. Some great friends that I saw every evening for a decade. Of all the pilots I've duelled, Bighorn was the best I ever knew. Always will be. But by that time I was already past wanting to be like anyone else. But there are too many to even start a list, most of them have already been mentioned here by others already. Skyrock's list covers some great leaders in ACM from 10 years ago.
If I had to pick one pilot who I wanted to emulate when I was new to the game it would have to be WldThng. I remember seeing a film of him in a spitV with a horde of uber planes all BnZing him at once out over the shag carpet AH1 water. These guys were dropping down on him like flies on poop and he was just pulling reversal after reversal and popping them in the canopy every shot he took. I remember watching in fascination at the geometry and realising how simple it really was. That film was a turning point for me in how I saw defensive flying turned into offensive. That dude was as cool as a cucumber.
I would love to get my hands on that film again.

That there in bold is why Bat is a great find for a new guy.... he will always offer the opportunity of more than a turn or two for the newer guy...and the more experienced like myself...it allows for learning and gaining confidence to try something you may not have done/or had the opportunity to do in the past.... not many guys like this now....to much kill as fast as you can...I am the master types.... <S> Bat
-
I have always given props to...ready for it?...Da Da Daaaaa...Hlbly!!!
Back in AW for years I flew bombers, till one day hlbly taught me that flying slow, controlled flight by flying a slalom around the old AW fuel tanks would help your control. That was the first step I took in becoming a cartoon fighter pilot.
Funny how after all those years we eventually ended up in the same squad (Muppets). Alas..it was brief :P
Also I would have to say +dead was a big inspiration to wanting to become a flesh eating juggernaut. Just getting to the point where it became a fight, was a victory for me vs him. Back then, he was the standard.
-
Filth, think about your mom at this point.. what she said..keep both your hands on the bicycle.. be conservative.. that is the idea.. smoothness is key in a fighter energy wise... your fph was telling you correctly..
-
We have some of the top-notch if not the best simulation fighters in the genre.. we should celebrate this greatness.. and aspire also..

I remember Magoo giving me my very first fighter lesson, "tho he probably doesnt", in a P51. He wow'ed me by flying inverted thru a hangar. And I'll never forget Ghost sitting in his Japanese fighter in the TA helping me a lot. I can remember 20 to 30 in the TA alone.

Anyone remember "Juice" and "Thor" from WB?
These guys were amazing.
-
Mac/Aw- Ren, Q, Flames, BuLL, Rabbit, Rodin, and another aw3 head trainer I can't think of now...(but he played here)
AH- Ren, Tw9, Bighorn, Creton, Skyrock
smacktalk Aw/Ah - +brat, skyrock
-
Daddy= and his P-51 from WB 2.7.
Great guy and ran a really good Pony course as well.
Yep. =Daddy= was a good one. Amazing Pony driver.
I wound up with him in P-51Ds....a 2 v 10 tail chase--a mixed gaggle of bad guys after us on the deck. With him quite calmly on coms talking me through it, we shot down nine and sent the other one home full of holes. Some pretty masterful Thach Weaves and vertical tail clearing moves in that fight. Man that was some fun.
-
Anyone remember "Juice" and "Thor" from WB?

I remember Juice but I was usually on his side as I recall...
-
Many old WarBirds trainers on my list.
-
Ta57x taught me a lot when I was a squeaker in the DA, then DrBone and RedBull taught me a lot of stuff too
-
Yep - Oldman, Bear, and Slash when we flew together or against one another. For a while when I was with the 13th TAS, Sax, Pugg, Rude, Yeager and myself seemed unstoppable.
And when I joined JG54, Storch, Tank, Truekill and I had a lot of fun.
-
Many old WarBirds trainers on my list.
=SD= was the guy that got me started and spent a bunch of time one-on-one teaching me. Quite a feat!

Many old WarBirds trainers on my list.

I learned a lot from a guy named Tac back in 2000/2001 after he took me into the world of p38 bomber flying. After that was Citabria and Kappa who i observed and pulled some knowledge from.
After that, it was dieing over, and over, and.. you get it. ;)

My very first would have to be Lynx hands down.
Still in game it would have to be all former and current members of the 80th

The guy that sticks in my head is juice= from WB's. He was the one that really got me thinking about beating the pilot, not the plane. Many, many others have taught me stuff over the years, but he's the one that got the ball rolling.
Wiley.

Drex, Gryf, and Wor were amazing. At the 2001 AH convention in Grapevine, I watched drex destroy all comers in the con dueling bracket. I stood behind him and watched the guy with his left elbow propped on the table holding up his chin while his right hand guided the stick. Never got exited, just whooped arse

<S> Bat
Cheers Tongs, we both know it's about the fight not the winning

When I first started playing I ventured into the ww 1 arena just to mess around. Soon a red dot appears on the radar so I head that way. The quickest ive ever been shot down. It was Iwlf. After many attempts over the course of a couple weeks he gave me some pointers and before long I was able to shoot him down a time or two although I think maybe he let me just so i wouldn't loose interest. I took his lessons very serious and they have helped my game tremendously. <S> Iwlf

FPH's span more than just country loyalty, To admire is to honour friend or foe. We are all united really.
Infact lets call a peace treaty, turn name tags on and kill shooter off!
