Title: 67th Fighter Squadron
Post by: Saxman on June 05, 2014, 06:51:57 PM
So I was playing around offline today, and noticed something:

The P-39D doesn't have a single skin for the 67th Fighter Squadron! The 67th's P-400s were an important part of the fighter defenses of Guadalcanal, in particular playing a crucial role by providing close air support during the Battle of Bloody Ridge.

Surely there's a skinner out there willing to rectify this injustice!

I'd take a look at it myself, but I haven't even been able to keep focused enough to work on more Corsair skins.

I'm kind of backed up on skins right now otherwise I would do it. If nobody decides to in the next couple of days I will add it to my list of things to do.

In the mean time, some more pics.

Yeah, and as I said, I haven't even been able to get around to finishing my Corsair template, dunno when I'd be able to start a completely new on.e

And while the P-40 is indisputably the best-looking airframe for the shark mouth, gotta admit the P-39/P-400 is a VERY close runner-up.

The B-26 makes it look pretty good.  :)

I am slowly redoing my P39 template, if Dragon doesn't want to do it, I can add it to the list.

Hell's Bell especially might be a good one, as it both as the 67th squadron insignia on the doors, and I believe it's also attributed to the squadron commander. The Guadalcanal birds still had the U.S. Army stencil in insignia blue under the wings, as well.

I asked for this one before.   Amazed it isn't in the game being so iconic.

The default template for the P39Q has a lot of problems in regards to rivet and panel line placing.

I just started a P39Q, it isn't this one but if no one else claims it within the next few weeks I will see about doing it.
With Pacific War around the corner it is hard to find time doing anything besides planning.

While in high school I worked for a man who was the armament chief for the 67th CO.  He was in the advance party of 4 men from the 67th sent to Guadalcanal, on the first night on the island Japanese snuck into their hootch and cut the throat of two of the men.  Sometime later he was shot down in a B-17 after having volunteered as a gunner, bailed out and was strafed by the Japanese fighter taking 4 MG slugs to the leg.  After 56 hours in a raft they were rescued, that was the end of his war.

I'd appreciate someone doing skins for the 67th.

We have 2 shark mouthed 39D's in game already. Check to make sure they're not duplicates before starting a new skin.

Some information here about coloring on the 67th's P-400s can be found here:

http://forum.armyairforces.com/P400-correct-paint-colors-Henderson-Field-1942-m192589.aspx

Essentially, as these were redirected lend-lease birds (note the British S/N format under the horizontal tail) the P-400s would have been painted using British specs. The camouflage on the upper surfaces would therefore have been in Dark Green, and either Dark or Light Earth. The undersides would have been painted Sky. However, as these aircraft originally carried the RAF fin flash, this would have been overpainted after they were redirected to the US squadrons, likely in Olive Drab. I think this is most likely ANA 613 Dark Olive Drab (RGB 85 79 68) over on Simmer's Paint Shop, as ANA 504 is specular/gloss. SPS notes two separate colors for ANA 613, however they speculate that the second color (RGB 95 94 78) is likely faded, so the other is the "fresh" paint job. Any subsequent touch-ups would have been from in whatever supplies were available on the island.

As noted on the P-40 threads, the U.S. Army stencils under the wings were in ANA 605 Insignia Blue, matching the roundel. Of note is that the P-400s deployed to Guadalcanal appear to be a mixed bag as far as whether or not they still possessed the red dots on the roundel. Some clearly don't have the dot, while some clearly do. Others seem to have an incomplete overpaint, causing the dot to bleed through the white paint applied over it.

Also, according to this (http://www.network54.com/Forum/149674/thread/1279710064/1279796580/Seeking+Guadalcanal+Airacobra+modeler+who+has+good+photos+of+his+model) site, the spinners on the 67th's P-400s were color coded by flights (either red, white, yellow or blue).

We have 2 shark mouthed 39D's in game already. Check to make sure they're not duplicates before starting a new skin.

I already confirmed they're not. The two shark mouth P-39Ds belong to the 80th FPS and 39th FS, respectively. There's nothing for the 67th.
