So there I was, 18,000 ft just looking for trouble. See a p47 below at about 13k. I began setting up my prey. Zoom in and he releases his ords and try's to follow me up. Just as he stalls I roll my nose over and there he sits like a wounded duck. One k, 800, 600, 400 and I open up. As we say in Arkansas, "I didn't even cut a feather!" I extend only to repeat my horrible gunnery. Over the course of the night I landed some kills but on numerous occasions I had the perfect set up, perfect scenerio, perfect everything except accuracy.
This rant is directed at one person and one person only, myself. I've set stuff up in offline practice and practiced and practiced. I won't give up, I won't be defeated. I'll just be glad when everything comes together.
Rant over!!!

Even the guys who are great shots complain that they stink, their definition is different than a novice's. They want to get hits/kills with least amount of bullets used.
I'm fine with just seeing the sprites, even if I used 1/4 of my ammo on one guy.
Takes a lot of practice and it's based off of feel in a lot of cases.
GL in your pursuit, be patient, it'll come.

Let me warn you now of the situation where you think you've improved but then you go back to being horrible. It happened to me a lot. :)
Also try practicing against real people as well, they fly different than drones. :lol

Keep your eyes open for Ryno's gunnery class. Even with my poor aim through the years a couple hours with him worked wonders.

Ok thanks..... I'll do that...

Another plug for Ryno's gunnery session. Was on it last week (with fugitive) and it is an eye opener for sure. :salute

How are your cockpit views set? i have mine set so where I thumb the hat switch forward, i can look somewhat over the engine cowling. I find my problem is over leading especially in turn fights. My rant is towards nerfed 20mm cannons. Three times in a row I put 6 shots into fighters at d400 and gave no more than a fuel leak, one even reversed and shot me down.
Also make sure your joystick axis are set to make sure you arent nose bouncing too bad. Got mine tuned in and now i feel much more stable

Use the force!
Or, I can't remember which Luftwaffe ace it was, but I seem to recall him saying something to the effect of "I fly so close my windscreen is filled with the enemy, then when I fire - I can't miss!"

Cremator,
I think you have the right attitude in that you already want to focus on and practice your gunnery. If you see me in game, shoot me a PM. I'll be happy to show you some basics and some practice techniques.
Unless you are just an absolute natural, gunnery is one of the hardest things to learn and the easiest skill to get rusty at, if you don't practice. Also, every aircraft has it's own nuances to how it shoots, different armament, different ballistics, different effects of your convergence settings, etc. So, it takes some time to learn to use each aircraft effectively.
RotBaron is right about their being different "levels" (I call them "plateaus") of gunnery. Last night I was frustrated that I was only landing 2 or 3 kills in a sortie (and 2 or 3 assists), instead of the 4 to 6 kills that I thought I should have. I like to average 3 or 4 kills per assist, which tells me I'm hitting my targets hard when I set up shots. That's one of the fun things in the game, as you improve you can raise the bar higher and higher for yourself -- I guess that's the nature of competitive people, too.
There is also a lot of "good flying" that goes hand in hand with "good gunnery". I see lots of people who fly to get "bad shots" instead of flying to set up "good shots". That is something better shown, than explained though.
At any rate, I'd be happy to give you some tips at some point if you see me in game [ID: RynoRush]. Or just shoot me a PM here on the forum, and maybe we can schedule a time in the TA.
Keep practicing. And be patient (that goes for practice and when shooting!) - and the kills will come.

Cremator, :salute , welcome to the game sir. I am very glad you are here. After 20 years of playing from AirWarrior through Warbirds and finally to Aces High, I still have bad days when I struggle with my gunnery. I try to relax when this happens and be patient, otherwise I end up just emptying my guns into the air. Also, lead your target more and get closer, are always the 2 things that will help. It may help if you fly "Cannon Birds" as it takes fewer hits to bring your enemy down, and Luftwaffe planes are the most fun anyway. If you are not already, I would also suggest you join a squad. You learn faster and it is more fun. Squads also participate in the "FSO", "Friday Squad Operations". This is a 2 hour operation on Friday evenings that hundreds of the best sticks and squads participate in. It is not a "free for all" like the Main Arena. You only get one life and one plane, you must follow orders, you must fly the aircraft you are assaigned and do the mission your squad is tasked with. Please find a squad that will take you immediately so you can fly it tonight. You must set this up before you go into the arena, do not wait untill the last minute, do it now.
If there is anything I can help you with, just ask.

My biggest problem lately has been having to hit an enemy 6 or 7 times before a single part falls off. It seems I'll have a our 4 or 5 sorties where no matter how hard or often I hit the enemy little to no damage is done. Then I'll have 1 or 2 sorties where I'm doing normal damage.

SkyRock<----owns Cremator and slaps him around with some old LilMak scalps lying around!

Don't know why you keep those LilMak scalps lieing around Skyrock. So many people have so many of those things they're worthless. You must trip over random scalps when you go to the bathroom.

Kingpin I'll definitely look you up! I'm in a squad. The Mighty 8th. :salute.
I have my forward hat switch set up where when I zoom I'm looking at the horizon but I'm going to mess with changing the view where as suggested I can look up and over the cowling....he'll of an idea! I've been flying the Niki so I got some fire power. Bounce was brought up and after my hideous performance last night I began playing with my scaling but my eyes grew heavy. I'll play with that more tonight.
Thanks for all the replies!!!

And for Cremator: Gunnery in my experience is learned through repetition and getting a feel for the ballistics of your armament. When working to improve your gunnery try to stick to aircraft with similar armament so that you aren't confusing yourself, basically if you are flying the N1K a lot then you should try and stick with that or some of the other cannon armed Japanese birds. I had a bad habit awhile back of switching between the 109K and birds armed with .50's, played hell with my aim :lol was over leading with the .50's and not leading enough with the 30mm everytime I switched.

Ya I'm with Floob here, not even close to a rant. More like, becoming self aware and determined to improve. Let me see if I can help.
So there I was, 38,000 ft just looking for a fair fight. See an alt monkey p47 below at about 13k. I began setting up the clueless dolt. Zoom in and he releases his ords and try's to follow me up. Just as he warps I roll my nose over and there he sits like a tank driver. One k, 800, 600, 400 and I open up. As we say in Arkansas, "I didn't even cut a feather!" I extend only to waste my time with this cable puller. Over the course of the night I landed some kills but on numerous occasions I had the perfect set up, perfect scenerio (Random Advertisement about the Perfect Scenario, Frame 1 of The Pacific War Saturday June 7th), perfect everything except my opponents who obviously have some CM or Admin friend helping them.
This rant is directed at one person and one person only, every damned one of you. I've set stuff up in offline practice and practiced and practiced. I won't give up, I won't be defeated. I'll just be glad when everything comes together and you fools fly like I want you to.
Rant over!!!
Hope that helps you prepare for your next rant.
btw, good post, hope you are having fun!

I think a good way to improve gunnery is to play some shooter games. Even fun little flash games would work. Recently I've been playing a lot of Defiance and I noticed that in that game I'm focusing on two things: Where my crosshair is and where the enemy is. I don't so much aim my gun at them as much as I line the two up (crosshair and enemy). I've been bringing that skill over to AH2 and have seen my gunnery improve slightly. When I'm going for a shot I focus on my gunsight and my opponents flightpath. I line the two up, pull the trigger, and they fly through my bullets. I don't focus on just my gunsight or just my opponents plane. I focus on both at the same time.
Try to train your eyes and brain to do that and your gunnery will vastly improve. :aok

I remember playing AW3 which had server side hit detection, that was hard. You had to not only compute lead, You also had to compute a variable amount of unknown lag. At least they used bubbles. I had a fight with a pony where I empty my corsair's 50's into it and didn't score a single hit even with the client showing hits. The only sure shots in that game where ones with the enemy wings level flying straight. I have always favored .50's in this game as it allows for more firing time which allows far more spraying the target area and higher hit chance than cannons. I like to compute a firing solution and then when I fire my first burst, I see if its over or under and then adjust the plane in that direction with the guns still firing. I also limit the spraying to only a second or two. You can also do this and just pump the trigger to save ammo but most of time I tend to not think about that when I have an enemy in my sights.

Cod yes that was in infuriating. Chasing a plane around in a luftberry looking at him in your up-forward view, watching him shoot and hearing his bullets hitting you. Players have a lot of good memories of AW so the memories of how bad it sucked as a game are glossed over.
