Title: Bora Bora and Bud Gray
Post by: SmokinLoon on June 13, 2014, 03:39:02 PM
So there I was, surfin' the interwebs clickin' on links of photos at morebendbox.com, when up comes this photo:

Interestingly enough I recognized the name of the airfield.  My late grandfather (points to signature line) flew out of THAT airstrip a number of times during his service.  A quick glance at his flight logs say he flew in and out of Bora Bora in B17E's and B24D's on multiple occasions, and a single flight in a C-61A.  Most of the destinations were Aitutake, Penrhyn, and "local".  41 hours of flight time in Jan of '44, none of them combat.  It appears to be ferry runs, cargo runs, and VIP shuttles.

Anyways... just thought I'd share.   :)

Penrhyn! My grandfather was the Sgt Major (Army) of that Island.  It is also known as Tongareva.  He met and talked with Eleanor Roosevelt for an hour when her plane landed there to refuel.  Penrhyn (Tongareva) was the refueling point between Hawaii and Christmas Island.
