sharpie marker dot works just as well. It wont work in an aircraft though.

Yes it will, My squaddie used a spitball on his monitor for a cross hair and would then raise his seating position in birds like the mossie. The spitball was just as accurate as being seated downward looking through the in game sights and he now had a better view out of the cockpit. You just have to compensate for the red dot as you would the in game sights for high-g gun passes and realize you need to lead your target.

Cheating? I think so. While it may not be specifically forbidden, it certainly ruins the spirit of the game...

I used to use a little dot on an old monitor for the pintle guns to spray low flying planes trying to strafe me

The Asus 144hz 24" gaming monitors have 4 different sights built into the monitor itself, which does pretty much the same thing. In some planes you can move your seat way above the gunsight line, and flick on the monitor sight, which has always lined up perfectly for me.
This is from Asus's website, I usually use the red sight as the green disappears in terrain at times. It was a downer that their IPS 1440p 27" monitor deleted this function.
