Title: WWII "fury" movie coming out?
Post by: Skyguns MKII on June 27, 2014, 01:19:02 PM
trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8u5eKUY0NI
behind the scenes (i found this cooler) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahFWvk1NgfY
Looks like it can be a big hit or a huge miss. I just hope its not all Hollywooded out and i hope there's a reasonable exclamation why an American tanker is using a German mp44 as you can see 2 mins into the trailer. catchy trailer though, looks like it gos in depth with a tank crews experience which was catchy for me in the trailer but iv gotta see some critic reviews first before i spend my $$$. Hasn't been too many movies worth watching this year...

Not sure why they could not do something historical. I feel disappointment coming with this movie.

Previews looked good to me.  Similar to Steven McQueens "The War Lover", except this is in a tank, not a bomber.

Same.

And did the US ever use Fireflies? Thought the Brits and Canadians were the only ones.

I believe that those were the M4A2 76mm versions and not Fireflies.

All the Best...

Well that killed the movie for me  ;); US only used the M4A2 at D-day, which also implies they weren't 76mm-armed.

I can explain that. The tankers would be issued M3 grease guns. They suck, mp44 is a much better gun and shorter than a garand.

The U.S. had 76mm armed M4s at the time of D-day, but none were the Duplex Drive (amphibious) versions.  1 in 4 Shermans in June of 1944 was armed with a 76mm cannon.  Let me recheck my sources to make sure I don't have something confused here.

I know Wikipedia isn't the most trusted source, but it shows two variants of Shermans having 76mm at the time of D-Day:
M4A1(76)W    Pressed Steel Car Company    3,246    January 1944 - July 1945
M4A2(76)W    Fisher Tank Arsenal
Pressed Steel Car Company    2,915    April 1944 - May 1945

Now HVAP ammo, that's an entirely different matter.  Rare stuff.

I know first combat use of the A3(76)W was in July of 44.

And wiki says the A2's only usage by the army was in DD models for D-day. Given that they're were no Marines in Europe, we can reasonably assume there were no A2(76)'s in US service in Europe.

What about the M4A1-76?

Quote
The combat debut of the M4A1 (76mm) was during Operation Cobra, the break-out from Normandy, which started on July 24,1944.  One of the new M4A1 (76MM) from the 2nd Armored Division is seen breaking over the top of a hedgerow near Pont Herbert with a T1 Rhinoceros hedgerow cutter fixed to the bow.
