Apparently you are able to fly a B17 with reasonable control without a vertical stab... Completely turn around... And land it...

Admittedly, it was quite fun...

I've landed 190s with out my vert (jetty always gets my vert in that AC). It wasn't my best landing, but I've done it before.

I landed a mossie missing it 's vert stab just the other day.  Had to keep the airspeed up however, otherwise it floated like a paper plate.
