You can turn off auto updates and just get notifications.

Or just disable the entire thing and manually check the third week of each month.

For the record this is the first computer game I have ever played, been a console gamer my whole life. I know how to turn a computer on and use the internet. If something happens outside that I call my brother who is  IT guru and give him access to my computer and he fixes it.

That being said I appriciate all the help this forum supplies and to skuzzy for all that he does.

It is important that you do the updates.  But have Windows tell you when they are available, and YOU choose when to download and install them.

Most people, myself included, wouldn't remember to check.   :bhead

Sounds like an update or a check for one. Antivirus, google, skype, HP, whatever. I'd check with e.g. Ccleaner->Tools->Startup->Scheduled_tasks and then go into each program's settings to disable daily update checks. Other tabs in the Startup section are also worth checking. If there's a necessary program whose settings don't allow disabling automatic updates then you can use Ccleaner to disable the updater from starting.
