Dave Schilling was the CO of the 62nd FS and was the first member of the 56th to receive the modified D-27 airframes that became known as the P-47M. The leading edge of the vertical stab of this aircraft was painted with a white stripe, probably to allow it to be identified as the CO's personal aircraft more easily.

Nice skin pardner.  It is worth noting that Schilling was given the reigns of the 56th when Zemke took another unit.  Hence, he was the boss and the most popular of the 56th COs till the end of the war.
