The August FSO is posted on the AH Events site: http://www.ahevents.org/fso-current-next-event.html (http://www.ahevents.org/fso-current-next-event.html)
Squad CO's please update your side preference and numbers, as needed. The side assignments will be made late this week.
Thanks! :salute

Awesome...looking forward to it... :salute

whats the date for the first frame? its not this friday right?
-
Looks to be August 8th - Frame 1, August 15th - Frame 2, and August 22nd - Frame 3.
I see this is a no-walk on event. If my squad isn't part of FSO, is there an allied squad willing to take me on for the last frame? I flew in the BoB last august as a hurricane and had a blast!

I suggest creating a new thread here in the FSO forum to ask for a guest spot on a registered squad. I'm sure you will have many invites to consider. Squad affiliation in the Special Events arenas do not interfere with any Main Arena squad affiliation.

325th VFG updated and ready to fly ALLIED
The BOB scenario's are probably the finest scenario in all of the FSO. I wait patiently all year for this scenario. Cant wait!!! I sincerely hope that major adjustments have been made from the last time we ran this scenario. The AXIS wipeout the ALLIES in 3 straight frames and the fun factor sucked. So put it back the way it use to be please.
And I still remember "The Bug's" AXIS plan in which he put the entire AXIS side into JU-88 formations for his Frame 3 and they attacked London in 3 waves. Still the most magnificent formation of bombers ever seen in the FSO. Nearly 100 pilots in all in formations coming in 3 waves spread out by 5-7 minutes each. Without a doubt the hardest formation of bombers I ever attacked. Nearly all of the ALLIED fighters got ripped apart and the AXIS lost about 50% of their bombers. What a fight!!!!
Don't forget to allow that 12 gun Hurri into the mix this time :)

Hi Viper,
Glad you enjoy BoB, sir!
According to what I've read, the Hurricane Mk.IIa was not put into service until September 1940, and the prototype 12-gun Mk.IIb wasn't even built until October. Sorry.
The chief differences of this run of the setup from last year's run are 1.) a 45/55 side split instead of 40/60, and 2.) RAF scoring points for ground targets not hit.
We'll see if it works out to be a more even fight this year. :salute

The AK's have our preferences updated.

Dr. Bino:
No I'm hoping for the best and like the rest of the guys the closer the sides are and the longer the fights the more the guys like it. I was ALLIED last scenario and I don't remember the points end of it. What I do remember was the AXIS winning nearly every air engagement over each target area. And over all the AXIS crushed, not beat but crushed the ALLIES 3 frames in a row. So hoping your side split works and tweaks if needed are done as we go.
Any reason why we cant use fewer targets? The problem is more targets is that a defender really has a disadvantage in that he cant put scouts out or really have any plan other than stay in close and wait for the attack. For the attacker he can still conduct a fighter sweep just ahead of his bombers. With the attendance currently 3 targets would be a more fun scenario in my opinion. Larger forces for both sides allowing for scouts, deception, sweeps etc.
Apprecate the BoB setup very much and would like to fly this twice a year if we could. Its one of the most even plane to plane setups.

Actually, last year this setup used seven targets. This year we'll have five targets. With up to 371 pilots if every squad hits it's current maximum commitment, that averages out to just over seventy-four pilots in the fight at each target. And some of those pilots will have drones along, too.

Dr. Bino:
Frame 01 is now in the history books and it played out as a cake walk and nearly complete defeat for the ALLIED side. I went through the logs for an "unofficial" count and my fuzzy math looks like this:
AXIS gained about 1059 points
ALLIES gained about 652 points
What I am missing is the non destroyed targets that would count for the ALLIES. However it wont be very much at all. Counting up the hangers and secondaries (the real points) the AXIS nearly completely destroyed all 5 targets down to the last door hinge. At best there might be 100 more points to the ALLIES but I am doubtful.
The real telling fact was at just before H+60 the ALLIES were down to only 22 planes in the air. While the AXIS had 79 (when I glanced at it).
The BOB scenario isn't much fun if your ALLIED plain and simple. This makes the 4th BOB frame in a row (3 last year all AXIS wins plus this one) in which the AXIS wiped out the ALLIES. I recommended changes last year and I am recommending them again this year. I don't like to lose any more than anyone else. I don't find the game fun to be wiped out. Changes I would recommend:
Drop from 5 targets to 4 or even 3. This will produce larger fights and with fewer targets the ALLIES can put out scouts which should allow the ALLIES to vector to the targets. Currently the ALLIES really don't have enough strength in any target sector to put out scouts. Or at least be able to plan a defense of other than "There ain't many of us. All stay in the radar ring and wait to get hit".
Realism and historically accuracy aside - Move the targets further inland. ALLIED A46 being 25 miles from France is a joke. Same target was used last year and it wiped out. Same again this year. When I say wiped out I mean not a single target left standing. If this target were further west probably wouldn't have happened or at least the AXIS would have to work for it and just give them a free base. Force the AXIS to fly through 2 or 3 radar rings to get to a target.
Adjust the side balance to 50/50 - If don't care to shift squads I understand. Then force more AXIS into bombers to achieve the 50/50 balance.
Make some very course adjustments please. Frame 01 was a total crushing defeat for the ALLIES. Even if you shifted to far and the AXIS got wiped out in Frame 02 it would be a dead heat going into Frame 3. And most importantly you would know where the balance point probably is.
Dr. Bino not easy doing your job and the pay is bad too :) Appreciate what you and the other guys do. Just requesting to take a fair and honest look at this. And if I am way off in my point values or AC ratio's above let me know.

I saw red guys. Had my guys shoot at them. Let the bombers know it was clear to proceed. Watched said bombers proceed. Saw some more red guys...had my guys shoot at them too. No more red guys...went home.

The special events and historical matchups is what keeps me with AH, certainly not the MA. I've flown many events but never FSO simply because I know it takes a lot of commitment and my flying time is pretty sporadic. I completely underestimated how large FSO really gets and must say this is right up my alley.
Some things I noticed that I think contributed to the overwhelming axis victory:
1) Hurri Is and spit Is just don't have the firepower to make a dent in those bombers. it really takes a concentrated hammering from those 303s to a weak wing area to put anything down. I only got two good squirts on some He-111s and while I didn't cause any apparent damage, I had to quickly disengage from them in order to defend myself from the numerous 109s.
2) one-on-one I think the spits/Hurris could handle a 109 fairly well, but in a gaggle like last night the 109 has a decisive advantage. As in my case, while I may be able to put bursts of 303s on the enemy with little effect, it only takes 1-2 cannon rounds from a 109 to put a british fighter down. Hurris/spits have to really focus in on their target in order to put it down, but having to divide your concentration between what is in front and behind you really hampers the british plane more than the german fighter. I mean If I was a 109 pilot chasing a target, I would not be as concerned with the lightly armed spit/hurri on my tail as I would be in a british fighter with a cannon bird behind me. On the same note, 109s have better view angles to look behind them than the spit/hurri.
3) the general rule I've seen that while the axis side may get fewer players, they get a higher percentage of the more experienced players. I figure newer players are going to mainly be more partial the side of their home country (which in the AH community is largely Allied oriented.)
British fighters at least have a plus of fighting over their own airspace and being able to have ample fuel or quickly rearm. We'll just need to tinker with the game plan to better suit our fight. But hey, thats the nature of an AH event, the winner could be anybody and history has no bearing on the final result. It would certainly not be as interesting if every outcome was scripted.

I only saw three 109s from Anti-Horde, seven BF-110's from JG54(great effort on your part for dragging the Hurris North away from the approaching bombers and then by pushing us down. I was lucky enough to evade your furball and climb away to hit the bombers) and ten sets of Ju-88's from the Claim Jumpers. My accuracy last night was the best shooting I've ever done, every time I pulled the trigger I managed to hit something....thin air that is. But all joking aside, when I made my slashing attacks on the whole raid that lasted at least 15 minutes, I'd come in from the 1 or 2 I clock from the bombers firing away, I flamed two this way and gave several missing parts. That was a well executed attack by the axis. I was about to rearm, I had 800-900 rounds left when the came back in at 2,000 feet for a 2nd run. I went full throttle diving into the fray which is where I flamed my first bomber over the airfield. I shot up a 110 also. After shooting them down I thought to myself how incredible. Then they came back for a third run and I said s*** here we go again. Then I heard a sound that made me cringe. I heard the sound of a Dailmer-Beinz engine and the distinctive cannons rounds being fired past my Hurricane. I rolled right and then kicked hard back to the left as the 109 shot by being chased by two hurricanes. I rearmed and headed back out and just danced with 109s until I collided with Kruel, which I apologized for because I hate when people collide with me.
A big salute to the axis for their attack it was excellent and very ballsy I liked it.

An oft quoted remark but the logs in Scenarios and FSOs that are "BoB 1940" designed do not show that to be true. Plenty of Luftwaffe a/c including bombers fall to the .303s. I will say this yet again...most AH players fly Late War Arena rides from 1944-45 and spend hours and hours shooting 50 cal, 20mm and 30mm guns. Then a few times per year they do a BoB setup in FSO say and are just not used to the difference.
40 medium bombers were shot down in frame 1 (out of 123 incl drones) or @ 1/3 of the force for only 130 RAF fighters up. Somebody's guns were working.
Not arguing that the 1940 guns (Allied and Axis both) are not what they were later in the war but they are perfectly lethal enough to shoot down planes. The #s shot down in BoB frames mirrors most other setups done.
Not meaning to jump all over you it's just I keep seeing this remark and it's more myth than anything else.

I couldn't agree more. The .303s are very capable of bringing down both fighters and bombers without much trouble. I find that firing against 109s I get lots of pilot wounds with them, and with bombers I take out gunners cause fuel leaks and even start a bon fire party. Personally I think that it depends on the convergence of your guns. My outter .303s are set to 275 while my inner are out to 325. It works perfectly.

I think the Allies who presume they got whipped on points will be very pleasantly surprised.
-
Oh no, i've had good luck with the hurricane in the past, But in those cases I didnt have bad guys both in front of and behind me. Knowing that there is a cannon right behind you makes you a whole lot more jittery trying to line up a shot on the target in front of you; therefore, I only got a few brief pings instead of the necessary amount of hits to break the target. I never saw the logs but based my comments on what I read earlier, which sounded to me like the 109s had their way and the bombers got through easily to deliver the bombs. What I was getting at was that while the 303s certainly have a buzz-saw capability at a close range and under a heavy dosage, they dont seem to have the quick knock-out ability needed for the high closure rate slashing/snap shots as compared to explosive cannon armed planes. I really didnt think we got as many bombers as we apparently did, but I only got a brief and limited view to the fight in my area before loosing a wing to a cannon round.

A62 was a fun time. We thought we spotted a 110 raid coming in. Tried to intercept but found ourselves out of place to intercept and ended up behind them skirting around the east and losing ground so we broke contact and went back to the base. We spotted the Ju88s. Lots of them! We pretty much lost the base but we managed to knock down a surprising amount of bombers AFTER they dropped. I believe the bombers made at least 2 passes.
The Axis attack on A62 was well planned and executed.
I felt like I was a Chihuahua trying to have my way, mounted on a guest's leg. VERY INTENSE!!!!! :O
I feel lucky to have landed with holes all over me and a fuel leak.
Regardless of score, it was a fun night!!!!

Sorry i had to go for the "ho" over the water but i was trying to get that bomber home and its about the only thing i have going for me in that situation. I tried dragging you away from him and it worked for a minute ;) All in all was very fun and cant wait for next week. <S>

No problem Bro! I ALWAYS expect a face shot when going one on one with a 110.
I anticipated it and almost missed the timing by about a millisecond. It was THAT close. I did get the fuel leak from that and it made me much more conservative than I usually fly.
You kept me busy and allowed your bomber to get away. That is a win for you. I can't remember if I was able to get my guys vectored to it or not. I know they were trying to get to me when I discovered there were more red guys coming!
YIKES!
It was a great fight, Sir!

Real life problems and prior commitments took its toll on JG54's attendance last friday so we figured the best way to help would be to act as diversion. It was a pleasant surprise how long we were able to keep your hurri's busy chasing us to the north west of a62. Overall the assault on a62 turned into an intense, drawn out slug fest of a kind I haven't been a part of for awhile; and one that I really enjoyed. :salute to the defenders over a62; last friday was great
