Theodore VanKirk, the last surviving crew member of the Enola Gay, has passed at the age of 93. VanKirk served as navigator aboard the bomber during its fateful mission to bomb Hiroshima.

"I honestly believe the use of the atomic bomb saved lives in the long run," VanKirk told The Associated Press in a 2005 interview. "There were a lot of lives saved. Most of the lives saved were Japanese."

Dude was only 24 when he went on that mission. Quite an accomplishment for such a young age.
