The Black Tulip on Hartmann's 109 is just this black artwork around the nose? Just curious....

No, He wore it.
-
or perhaps you mean - did it serve any purpose other than scaring the pants off red airforce pilots? No - just paint.
-
No, when I first heard he painted a black tulip on his aircraft I literally thought there was an actual flower painted on the side...but when I looked it up I see the black triangles painted by the nose and assumed that was the "tulip".
-
correct.
-
Cool thanks! :)
I also think it looks pretty cool. :aok :)

Very Welcome. Sorry I wasn't sure what you were asking at first.
Yes I agree, it makes a nice forward fuselage design.

It was on his F86 as we'll I think.

More likely a CL-13. Lw got 300 of them.

I remember reading in his biography that a short after that paint job appeared, the enemy disappeared in any area it would fly in. They then started letting new guys fly the aircraft to get their feet wet so to speak and allow him to fly non-descript stuff so he could still rack up kills.

After he was repatriated to the free side of Germany ( with apologies to the Finns, who doubtless received a different , perhaps more ussr-friendly , version of events) in '56, he rejoined the Luftwaffe and served until '70. Here's the lit butt I want to chuck into the rattler pile: according to wiki, he resigned in '70 over a falling out over the deployment of the f-104 Starfighter. Apparently, he found it somehow unsuitable as a "fighter". I can't imagine why ... <cough ... Super stall...> <cough ridiculously high wing loading >... Anyway, does somebody have any elaboration on this matter?
-
Musta wondered how he felt knowing those guys were so scared of him. :rofl
-
Something about using the 104 as a low level fighter bomber, iirc.
-
Hartmann only used that paint scheme for a short time. The Russians started avoided him so he had it painted over.
-
very interesting wiki writeup on the gentleman

You guys know that the forum profanity filter uses the word tulip right?

Do they replace some forms of "wiener" with it?
