Thanks to Goaly and Fencer for bringing this scheme to my attention. There are photos of this and other similarly painted Hellcats here (http://www.warbirdinformationexchange.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=53664&start=30#p534131).
This Hellcat was part of part of VF-38 based on Green Island in the South Pacific during 1944. It features some unusual white ID markings on the cowling, rear fuselage and tail surfaces.
