Title: Smack Talk Forum
Post by: nrshida on August 13, 2014, 10:49:42 AM
I was wondering if there could be a special Smack Talk Forum where the competitive ones could really have at their verbal banter and thus draw it away from other threads discussing such things as 109s and ACM techniques and styles such as BnZ versus TnB.

Yes, there needs to be a place where cartoon pilots can attempt to measure and compare their infinitely long e-peens.

The fact that people are agreeing with this will start an argument.

I'd actually rather see more strict moderation and perma bans for those who feel the need to smack talk on the BBS. Then AH BBS would give a much much more positive image of AH community.

Greetings, Shida!

Hello old friend, how goes the war?

It's a bit embarrassing. Tiny Shida is two now which means ACM training has begun. He's started with barrel rolls, mostly augering in in a counter-clockwise direction but his lift vector is perfect. I told him to read an article on the forum about pursuit curves and found him two minutes later typing that the first Lady wears Army boots to an American friend via PM. This is the only place he could have picked up such habits as he goes to a hippie daycare centre  :old:

The problem is that smack talk is subjective. One man's objective statement is another man's horrific insult. As such, you can never enforce such rules without being biased to at least one poster, one way or another.

Trying to moderate such interactions only leads to more clever ways of getting around said rules, which leads to more pent-up frustrations and bigger, more violent and unpredictable outbursts.

The best course of action is to lay down simple rules (e.g. a common one is no ad-hominem attacks) and let the threads run their course.

Yup goes fast. I keep saying we have to enjoy every day. It's a fascinating journey.

How are you and yours bud?

I was just thinking a smack talk forum might allow those of us uninterested in it to get some peace  :D

Banning ad hominem might do the same thing more simply...I can't tell you the number of rational discussions I've seen get dragged into the mud because someone's idea of a rebuttal was equivalent to "You stink!". My own nature not being angelic, the temptation to respond in kind, only with far more wit than such detractors bring to the table, ends in a downward spiral. But the boards have been like this ever since I can remember, so...

Expressing an opinion here, especially a counter-current one, has always carried the possibility of drawing "You suck!". Backing it up with logic has always carried the near-certainty of drawing "And your mother wears army boots!".

:rofl I love the Army boots motif.

Yes that's true, but smack talking is a bit more systematic and with another agenda.

I personally prefer to think of the "enemy" as a bunch of pixels on a screen that form the image of an airplane, the motions of which form the puzzle I'm trying to solve. But unpleasant reminders that there are actually a whole bunch of upright tool-using monkeys behind all those pretty pixels occur with frequency. Alas.

I've never really minded smack talk except when it gets too personal.  I've been guilty of that too, but I try my best not to go down that path.

I really don't think a smack talk forum would work.  It might even have a negative effect by encouraging MORE conflict.

Just my $ .02...which is about all its worth.  :)
