How will NATO respond???

NATO is America, which means we will go golfing, or condemn violence in Missouri.
Germany has responded by very quietly approving numerous coal mines and extending licenses for coal produced electricity. Europe is getting off of Russian/Ukrainian natural gas. This is seen as both a necessity as well as a foreign policy move to harm Russia.
France responded by selling a naval ship they had just finished, for Russia. Russia purchased the ship several years back though NATO, UK, USA and several others had strongly encourage France to withhold delivery pending Russian activity in the Ukraine. France went ahead anyway.
The US did respond to France by penalizing France's largest commercial bank almost $10 billion for doing business with countries the US has embargoes, read Iran. France is threatening to begin taking their trade of US backed securities (aka the Dollar) in response.
Two months ago China and Russian inked a massive development, and delivery contract for natural gas.
Should we talk about what the Chinese, Japanese, South Koreans, North Koreans or doing?
Yes, I like golf, too.
PS Does this seem like the years prior to WW1?

1945-1949 were the perfect time to take care of Russia...
-
Another note, one of these "Ukrainian seperatist" was identified as a Russian Colonel. It is reasonable to expect that many of these are in fact Russian regulars doing exactly what US Special Forces have done since the 1960's.
-
I believe all that. But knowing how O'bama reacted to Sryia I think there will be some hard measures taken. We as the USA cant allow are selves to have a I dont care Attitude. I dont want to make a pollitical discussion out of this... What are thoughts on the shape of Russian Millitary and Equipment

NATO won't be able to handle a ground war with Russia.

NATO won't be able to handle a ground war with Russia.
Reason???
-
most of western europe has disarmed after the cold war. leaving it up to the US to protect them. not enough forces.
-

Right now Russia can't handle a major war against anyone. European NATO forces outmatch the Russians in every category but nuclear, but if it comes to that it will be a Pyrrhic victory for the Russians. Europe actually has more of everything military than the USA except naval and nuclear.

I think the Typhoon would probably hold it own. But what about the Chinese do You think they will see this as a Chance for Tawian..
Be hilarious if they went North to Siberia. Just what Putin needsf :rofl :rofl
I think Nato would really go for A ROUND OF GOLF

The EU has about 1.5 million men on active duty as we speak, and that is on a peace footing. My tiny country alone has the capacity to call in about one million reservists since we have a conscription system. Every able bodied man (and as of last year also women) has to serve one year in the armed forces. The USA has about 1.3 million men on active duty, including the mighty US Navy.

Gibberish!
Trillions of dollors were pumped into the former Soviet Union when the Communists lost the economic cold war (ie the arms race)
The Russians are part of the economic system now and is owned by the US because of this :)
Yes North Korea is going to invade Iceland next week :old:
Someone is making lots of coin and its not me :cry
Yes keep your powder dry and get my gun boy!
Everyone is the enemy today except those Indians who live in the Amazon rain forest, give them 20 years they will be at it.

I think Russia wants to get whacked...
Either that or they want to get stabbed in the back by China...
-
I knew it was gonna happen.
Made a thread on it and it got locked so I just stfu'ed
-
I'm moving in with Zack....he makes a hell of a lot more sence than the nature of international diplomacy now-a days
:aok.

I don't see it snowballing into a world war or even a large regional conflict. The reason is simple, as no country is going to intercede on Ukraine's behalf and Ukraine will be left to manage on their own.
-
It will be handled with a "phone and a pen" by a talking head from a Martha's Vineyard golf course.
-
As I understand it, the Russians are still denying they have troops on the ground, apart from the 10 who were there "accidentally".
-
Delirium is right. Nobody has treaties with Ukraine. We also have to remember that the Ruskies are looking at this from the perspective that the current government in Ukraine was installed after a coup that they insist we funded.
Ultimately, Ukraine is going to lose its Russian speaking provinces, just it like it lost Crimea.

In my opinion it's a lot like the posturing of the Axis powers before WW2. Before the Second World War officially started, the Axis countries of Germany, Italy and Japan were fighting far off conquests in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. The Germans occupied some of their neighbors, the Sudetenland and then Czechoslovakia. The Invasion of Poland is what started WW2 in Europe. It took two more years for the Japanese to drag the US into it.
The US and it's allies have been on a campaign in the middle east and central asia, dabbling in North Africa and Egypt and now eying Syria. Russia has revisited it's old neighbor Ukraine. What will be the occupation or annexation that officially starts WW3?
-
I really doubt ww3 is going to start over Ukraine.
ISIS I doubt would start WW3, but I think is a much bigger problem. DO some research on them and where they came from and other countries and special interest groups which may possibly be involved.
I am stopping here. Saying anymore or in detail would be against rules.
I am not asking for a reply either.
I did some research and there is some interesting reading.

I had written something like that but deleted it in this thread previously. The difference is Putin may be narcissistic and egotistical but he will know when to stop territory when the world powers decide to do something more than economic sanctions. Right now, economic sanctions are the only thing on the table and even that is close to impossible to enforce (much less have a vote on it) with Russia supplying Europe with so much energy.
Peace in our time...

Yup. Putin has sized up the West, and calculated that the West isn't going to discomfort itself over "a quarrel in a far-away country between people of whom we know nothing." He'll take what he requires, which is a land route to the Crimea and a buffer zone between Russia and NATO, and then will say (in Russian) "what are you going to do about it?"

Putin will not stop until he meets an unbeatable opposition. The Ukraine is just a warm up.

I agree.
-
... Nobody has treaties with Ukraine...
That is incorrect. The US, China, and Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum along with somewhat different promises from the UK and France. This memorandum promised protection of the borders of the Ukraine in exchange for the Ukrainians turning over their nuclear arsenal to the Russians. It also promised similar protections for Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Russia completely violated the treaty. The US and China stood idly by, and the UK and France did nothing.
As a US citizen, I am ashamed of my government's handling of this matter.

Agreed. If the West stands by and allows Russia to violate Ukrainian sovereignty in this manner it's going to set a bad example for other ex-Soviet Bloc countries that might be eying closer ties to the EU and United States.
It will be a diplomatic embarrassment that's going to really hurt the credibility of the West if Ukraine is hung out to dry.
-
Just a technicality, but the Budapest Memorandum never made it to treaty.
-
...It will be a diplomatic embarrassment that's going to really hurt the credibility of the West if Ukraine is hung out to dry.
1st Diplomatic embarrassment... is too diplomatic way of describing what happens here.
2nd the credibility of the West already way down low... look around the world?
Sorry to disappoint you, it isn't "going to happen" it is already happened...
Just $0.02.

Actually ISIS may be the common enemy we need to stop fighting each others.

Oh how I wish you would have. I would sleep so much better today.

Just leave Russia alone. They are just the same as the rest of us except they are not as afraid to show the world their true colours.
Fix our own countries first.

Yeah they're just great if you happen to like lying, cheating and backstabbing agressive countries.

Locked for violation of rule #14.
Do you guys actually read those articles? They clearly talk about politics.
