Title: more information from radar
Post by: hotcoffe on September 04, 2014, 05:05:26 AM
since wwII radars were able to estimate alt and speed of a contact , we should have this in game as well.

You can gauge speed pretty decently by watching the bandit move on radar already.

It wouldn't bother me any as I am already an alt monkey but I believe the addition of alt to the radar would result in rampant alt monkeying, which many would not like.  If they know it's higher than them, they're going to run away to get more alt.  The way people already avoid fights, it would be just another reason to do so.

I agree completely with this.  I believe removing the element of surprise regarding an aircraft's alt would be detrimental to gameplay, therefore, respectfully,

-1 on the O.P.

I like a little mystery on what I'm going after... or what's coming after me. Radar with every little detail takes the fun out of it.

More information would definitely useful and I think it would lead to MORE combat, not less.   If the radar was telling you one set of contacts inbound to your strats was large, slow moving, and low vs another contact that was small, high, and fast - you have the information you need for deciding the priority for interception.

Most radars couldn't, not like modern radars at least. Some could tell "high" or "low". More "accurate" altitude measurement could be done with a special separate radar that was scanning vertically and measure altitude on a particular target. Even that was not very accurate and at long ranges could easily be off by a few thousand feet.

well dont need to be very accurate it can be something similar:
1. contact: estimate alt : between 12k -20k
 estimated speed : 250-280 mph
 current heading : 270 etc...

that way there will be still some mystery to it but defenders have a lil more info on in coming contact. And also they can make it so lets says those info will be available if contact is above 10k and
a continues contact for lets say 1min...

so if you blink the dar only for 30sec, radar wont be able to show any info on you because it wont be able to collect enough data.
