So a little British birdie told me that Aces High II is testing its new graphics engine and I sure miss Territorial Combat in my simulator. I downloaded the game tonight and forgot how involved it is to set this game up. Anyway, once I get things running and all subbed up, I'd love to welcome you all to come shoot me down. I may need some help to find where to get shot down, but do hope to be as good as you all are. Much love to all my former Fighter Ace mates.

Many thanks and great to see so many familiar faces that continue to dominate in any game they play. I look forward to going through the learning curve and having fun while at it.

I never considered Kruel and Skyyr new.
The games, FA and AH, are similar. Whatever skill you had in FA should've transferred over.
There are differences, yes, but not very drastic differences.
All an opinion.
Welcome Back, great to have you.

Not really. Turnfighting is the same, everything else is different. Views, energy retention, gunnery - it's nothing like FA, which is why very few came over here. It's similar enough you can make the connection if you focus, but the majority of people who flew FA weren't even interested in AH because it was so different.
That said, Admiral is prior FA Damned. That should tell you everything you need to know.

There are ACM principles you can definitely put into practice that translate over from FA, but the flying is much different, turn fighting there was much less forgiving than it is here, that means you have to incorporate/adjust more into all types of flying to be successful here. It changes everything.
The similarities are in the community (a lot more whining here though) the graphics, and LWMA (territorial conquest in FA)

Yeah. Fighter Ace was a much more "pure" sim, where there was a direct balance between energy and angles. The more angles you pulled, the more energy you lost. Being good at dogfighting was very scientific and logical. Tactics were visually and functionally verbatim out of Shaw's book. That's all there was to it, everything else was simply decisions.
Here, there's a much bigger bias towards turning. Strangely enough, the game is more forgiving because of it. Everything's more lateral/horizontal, and there are many more "gamey" maneuvers that people pull. I found AH easier than Fighter Ace, but no where near as clean or straightforward.
Now we just need Rilak, Scorpion, and Dragonmate back here.

The fa realistic arena was comparable to ah, that's it. With the views and physics in the other fa arenas, to call fa a sim is a big stretch. I had fun there, but it compares more to turd thunder.

A more realistic sim environment does not make for a better game. There's a balance, and in my opinion FA had the perfect balance.
Along the same lines, to call this game a sim is a stretch. It's a game, and their are more nuanced gamey tactics here than were ever in FA. The aspects of flight that "hardcore sims" try to capture more often then not are modeled less than perfectly, and simply end up being aspects of the game that can be exploited due to these flaws (e.g. torque). This is why the Intermediate arena in FA was the most popular, even more so than Arcade. It captured the essence of dogfighting, without the superficial restrictions that serve only to fulfill a hardcore sim enthusiast's fantasies. Likewise, this is why War Thunder continues to succeed and outperform AH, despite being an inferior sim experience.
Regardless, it never ceases to amaze me when people point out that "their" game is supposedly more realistic than another game, when said player is mediocre at best in both.

Many thanks to everyone posting and look forward to meeting new and old friends. I'd like to add that since I've had the opportunity to perform well in both Fighter Ace and War Thunder, I look forward to the challenge of Aces High II.
In my humble opinion, all of these games are based on their game developers best efforts to provide an enjoyable flight combat simulation. Each of these games will always hold positives and negatives from each players opinion based on the great features the games provide. These players will always have their own opinion and concerns at which the game and support community will best satisfy. Keep in mind that in each support community you will never know the full details behind why decisions were made whether they agreed or disagreed to it, but something the game community need to live with. That being said; the (SysAdmin,SysOp,GameOp, whatever they may be called) may have the same view point with you on an issue that they may not portray, but just can't relay their true feelings based on their position.
In regards to Energy game vs Turn Fighting will always be based on the capabilities of these aircrafts, flight models and physics along with possible known/unknown exploits/bugs. From my experience, the energy game will always prevail, but success doesn't always revolve around tactics, but also proper configuration for efficient flight and utilizing the game features to its fullest. You will also need to consider situational awareness and in many cases dependencies on your team/wingman tactics and trust. However, at the end of the day these Combat Flight Simulators are games and if the player enjoys their experience then everyone has succeeded.
There will always be players wanting to be the best - I know this from personal experience. However, in my opinion, wanting to be the best is a factor of what makes these games so great. You will always find someone that can shoot you down and some will accept it and others (such as myself) will go off and kick the neighbors cat with frustration. The reactions are where you will find those that work on improving their games or complain about an exploit, bug or some condition that occurred to allow them to be shot down. I will never tell you I am the best in a game, but I will always tell you I will shoot you down. :)
In the end everyone will have their own successes and failures (good and bad days), but what I get most out of these simulators are the great friendships and experiences within the game and on rare occasions extend into real life. I have already noticed Aces High II to be a great community and look forward to becoming a part of your gaming life.
Much Respect.

Quote "some will accept it and others (such as myself) will go off and kick the neighbors cat with frustration. LMAO! Sounds so true. I was playing on a small screened CRT. Was a bit heavy to toss out the window, but I did smash my Sidewinder on my desk hard enough to break the keyboard drawer. That was an all-day process to repair and reinforce so it won't happen again. Yikes. :lol

Sorry, but a gunsight view (fa) where you can look straight down through your invisible wonder woman plane is not Sim-like. It enables unrealistic lead shots impossible with cockpit view only.
But...your opinions are right because you're awesome.

Oh, so a single unrealistic aspect can ruin a sim? Good thing those Spitfire vs Spitfire fights are historically documented. Or that F3 view was available for bombers. :rofl

Welcom Admiral! AH is desperate for someone who knows how to steer a boat. :D
Lots of great folks in the game. Its a video game with internet anonymity, so obviously it has its share of 10 foot tall characters but once you filter those out of the mix its a great group of players.

No but it definitely stands out as something that seemed to have been idiotically added while surrounded by all the other realistic aspects.
Basically I'm saying it stands out in a way that isn't right…

It was added for accessibility. There's no reason to limit players by forcing them to use an aspect that has no real bearing on the subject matter. Does looking around a cockpit take skill? No, it just takes a small amount bit of familiarity. You may disagree, to which I would point out that you probably don't know engine emergency restart procedures. Does your lack of knowing how to restart an engine in flight have any real effect on the skill of dogfighting? No. Ergo, forcing people to learn it would add to the learning curve and make it difficult for new players to join the game.
There were 3 different main arenas in FA - Arcade, Intermediate, and Advanced. Arcade and Intermediate allowed for full-screen view. Full Advanced did not. Guess what? 80-85% of the playerbase played Intermediate, with 10% or so playing Arcade. Less than 5% played Advanced. Games like War Thunder show the same preferences.
People want to jump into the action. Anything that doesn't provide action that stands between the player and that action is an accessibility barrier. Full-realism is rarely ever as accessible (or fun) as relaxed realism.

If a flight sim game becomes too realistic, I'd rather just learn to fly the real thing. That being said, I'm glad there's no external or gun aiming bots in AH MA. I would be pretty bored if I had to go through all the bells and whistles of actual engine start up procedures. I like how AH is moderately realistic but you don't have to worry about switches and crap so you can just focus on the flying aspect part of the game.
-
I demand that we have realistic cold start procedures in AH! :old:
With fully clickable cockpits! :old:
At a minimum it should take at least 20 minutes to get airborne! :old:
That is my definition of fun!
I also enjoy watching reruns of The Lawrence Welk Show. Polka dancing rulez!!! :rock
-
I've played sims with "gunsight" view available, though not FA. Like F3, it can by no means be called realistic. Like F3, it was probably there to compensate for some limitations of simming. A real human who can move their head and has binocular vision does not completely lose a bandit behind a cockpit bar as easily as happens in sims. That said, AH differs from many sims in allowing enormous freedom and flexibility of view adjustment. Combine that with 6 DOF TrackIR and there is little reason to have a "gunsight" view point in AH, although it would be no worse than having F3! :devil
WideWing once made a fairly cogent argument for NOT making the enemy plane icon disappear every time the dot went slightly behind a slim cockpit bar, again based on head movement and binocular vision. I tend to think he was right in that regard, I don't see much purpose the currently modeling serves besides annoying 109 pilots. :D

sure wish people would stop trying to compare AH2 with FA there's no comparison at all being the same kind of game.. AH2 used to be more of a semi realistic flight sim combat game with Gv's on the ground for people who like to do that..... it seems to be evolving into something else where 12 oclock deflection shots are the norm and nobody really wants to "fight" 1 high speed pass and they're gone lol FA I tried it in its hayday just wasn't for me just to Arcadish kinda like a world of planes or war thunder besides if it was such an awesome game it wouldn't be 6 feet under in the video game graveyard. :airplane:
