How did it end? I fell asleep. No joke.
I hope this aspect of the FIA is wildly successful if only to take the pressure off of Formula 1 to be 'green'. But if this is how the world sees the future of motorsports...Go Electric Racers! Whine on to victory!
Intrusion of social media - Where do I text to give my fav driver a "Fan Boost" during the race?
If all aspects of life are to be directly influenced by anyone who can afford a smart phone I think we're in for a rough time. Or mediocrity at best. Hated to see FIA encouraging that.
I watched my first Formula 1 race at Silverstone in 1964. So I'm old. Sorry. Come to think of it, I remember my dad telling me "Helmets? Seatbelts? If this is progress, then you can have it."
Now I'm depressed.

I hear ya. And I think you are right.
I suppose what bothers me is the vast amount of money it takes to develop these highly complex power units and that they were mandated by FIA rules. But I suppose being 'out-monied' is not new in motorsports.
There's some very good Formula 1 teams that are not competitive this year because they weren't able to cobble a turbo onto KERS. We end up with all the excitement and mystery of which of the Mercedes factory drivers will win each week (unless they are crashing into each other :devil). But I don't think that will happen again.
How could Ferrari and Renault get it so wrong?

They had Ebikes at Daytona last year and will again this year comming!
The laptimes are comparable and it wont be long before the Ebikes will be faster than gas driven bikes. The Ebikes already leave the gas bikes sitting off the line and since they have a flat torque curve the twistier the track the better the Ebikes will preform.
All they need do is add some speakers and playback the sound of a 18,000 rpm Vtwin and no one will know the difference! :devil
Beleive it or not there was a time when there were more electric powered vehicles on the road than there were gas powered.... hmmm wonder why that changed?

Yup. The E-Bikes also ran at Isle of Man this summer. I was surprised they could make a whole lap there. Times weren't competitive with Pro Class, but I'm not exactly sure of the talent of the E-Riders.

Yes I heard that too! They dont broadcast the Isle of man racing here much so it's hard to see whats been going on.
I think E vehicles in racing is a good thing,the development of battery tech,more efficient motors and all that goes with racing can only be good in the long run! Heck maybe we can make enough ozone to plug that big hole.... :devil

Holy guacamole! Don Garlits is a no BS guy. A real racer. He walks stiffly because he had his big toes blown off in a clutch-bell housing explosion (old front-engined rail). For a lot of reasons, I can see drag racing as a better introduction venue for e-motorsports.
I agree with you, Morfiend, that better battery-technology is good for many aspects of modern living, but I'd like to see more research done about how to responsibly dispose of worn out ones. I'm more concerned about that than the ozone hole or global warming. We should put plugs in all of Earth's volcanoes first. :rock
So what's bothering me about E-Racing? It's the old thing about "race on Sunday - sell on Monday". I simply cannot picture myself on an epic road trip in an electric version of my Sequoia (4.7L with 104K miles on it). It's too weird to grasp.

I hear you Ratsy but we need to get off the oil crack pipe sooner rather than later!
And yes there are issues with batteries and disposal but this is one of the aspects that could be solved,face it lead acid batteries wont cut it so we need to use batteries made of things that may be toxic,etc. and I can see a whole new problem with that. However as I said there was a time when there were more electric vehicles on the road than gas powered! Look back at the early 1900's and most trucks and buses used electric motors and they were the majority of the vehicles on the road.
Tesla built an electric powered Pierce Arrow and drove from NY to Detroit with it,apparently Westinghouse said,well what good is it if I cant put a meter on it! :devil
