Title: Need the Straight Skinny
Post by: Randy1 on September 18, 2014, 04:57:12 PM
What is the straight skinny on the following.  I have heard several different answers on vox.

1. How low in feet to be undetected by the dar-bar?
2. How low in feet to be undetected by the radar?
3. How low in feet to disappear  from an enemy on your 6?

I usually don't see a darbar pop until they reach 1k. I think the number of aircraft also effects the sensitivity of the darbar.  however.. it's pretty well known that the DarBar is sketchy at best.  Ive been in a sector with no Bar at all, and run smack into a co-alt 10k con.  Ive also seen 2 planes lift off and through a darbar instantly.

To not show up on local Radar, you have stay below 60'. it used to be much higher.

Disappear from a con on your six ??  umm I guess just keep diving till you hear a splash.

1. 250 feet agl
2. 65 feet agl

You can always both these  (and many more)  values  in the arena settings at any time.

3.  :headscratch:

I think for number 3 he's talking about making the icon disappear.  Below the tree tops.

Lusche has #1 and #2 down, and like he said you can check them in the arena settings. As for #3, you never "disappear". A some angles the icon information will not show, but like GVs other angles you can still see it.

Thank you Lusche.  The 250 on the dar surprised me.  Most vox quoted on a NOE is below 100 or 75 and that was usually for both dar and radar.

On number 3.  Its when the red guy disappears into the ground and usually occurs on land with rolling hills.  Happened last night again but it is not something I see more than say once or twice a tour.

I have seen the icon disappears on water but not the whole plane.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

That's why it's always better to look up things for yourself, if possible. There's a lot of conflicting and often incorrect information put out on the game channels. Arena and object settings can be checked at any time give you a wealth of information, from object hardness & downtimes, to radar & base warning distances.

This is not a game design feature as such. On his screen he's flying just above the ground. Simplified spoken:
The game does some kind of short term prediction of his flight path, and his actual flight path on his screen can be slightly different from that. Usually this difference is too small to be notable, but if his connection is really 'laggy', this difference can be great enough to cause the effect you described.

But like you also noticed, this is quite rare and significant only in certain circumstances.

I had not even considered checking the arena and object setting.  I figured it was for offline only.  My bad.  Thanks again for pointing that out.

I thought less than 65 feet agl makes icon disappear.

3 = how low on the deck one needs to be before the icon is displayed below your plane (and is masked under the rendered terrain).

To my knowledge at its heart this is an anti-vulching mechanic of the icon "coad" (for enemy icons on your end).  When one spawns on the runway, players above them do not get the "neon sign" advertising such instantly.  Not really an abusable thing as I believe (via observation) it's roughly the distance of your a/cs gear extended (don't sneeze).  To add another con/pro into shooting at an enemy this low over water, bullet splashes in the water can help you lead them in a diflection shot, but make it much harder to see him at a closer to dead and level 6.

The confusion with dar bar is best chalked up to players guessing, combined with the dar bar mechanic of only updating every __ seconds/minute.  How high can one climb above 260ft (the registering number) and the time the dar bar cycles an update?  And now, how wide is the spread of uneducated guesses?   :aok
