I like apple, I hate apple. My ipad 2 works great as long as I don't upgrade it and don't care about cellular data which I need to upgrade to have work again which will make everything else unusable etc etc etc

Wth are you talking about? How does upgrading stop you from doing stuff and why do you need cellular data in general when you can use wifi instead?

Apple products are a cult

Well you can't always use wifi instead else no one would have a data plan for their smartphone. Upgrading turns it into a brick because everything goes super duper slo mo, as in tap the keys and wait, zoom out and wait. Start an app and wait. Throw ipad at wall and wait.

Then your device has a problem. Upgrades do not jam the devices. If you can't afford a data plan why did you get a smart phone / tablet in the first place? Our iPad is used exclusively on wifi since my kids mostly play with it at home. I prefer to use the laptop myself when travelling.

Do you have os 8 on an ipad 2? Who said I couldn't afford a data plan? It's great that you like to use a laptop while traveling but I like to use my ipad. My point is that it is a perfectly good device that is going/is being abandoned with no support for an os that can run on it. It is planned obsolescence and it is annoying.

Yes they can. For example updating iPhone 4 from iOS 6 to 7.0 very noticeably produces a laggy effect to touch inputs and apps open slower. The update to iOs 7.1 did much to alleviate the performance loss. This was also true for iPhone 4S with the faster A5 chipset, although to a lesser degree. Updates addtionally use more storage space and with the 8gb models of iPhone storage space is often at a premium. Running very low or even out of storage space will drastically hurt performance. I do not know of any performance gains or losses from updating to iOs 8 yet, although I would expect some performance loss in terms of speed as the older iphone 4 will not be able to update.
Your Ipad2 came out in 2011, which is the same year as the IPhone 4s. It is my guess that you may notice some loss of speed by updating. Then again you wont get the additional benefits of the new software.

I think you are saying that you can not have cellular data unless you upgrade the software? That does not sound right to me at all. What wireless carrier is embedded in your ipad?
Note: I used the iPhone examples because I have direct experience with them (its my career! :old:), much less so with tablets. Apple though is rather predictable with their approach so and an ipad of the same generation as as the iphone should perform and react to new software very similarly.
-
The solution tree or whatever it is called goes "reset network settings, upgrade ios"
Reset network settings helpfully deletes all your wifi passwords and makes no difference. The distinct impression I got from the apple people was that I needed to upgrade. Thing is I need 5.7 gb of free storage to do it and I don't have it.

It is planned obsolescence? Is it a very specific upgrade path that integrates hardware and software?
2008 iphone 3G launches with iOS 2.0
2009 iPhone 3GS launches with iOS 3.0
2010 iPhone 4 launches with iOS 4. Both the 3G and the 3GS models update to this software version. The 3G experiences performance "concerns." The next update to 4.1 alleviates some of those concerns. :noid The 3G model no longer receives updates past version 4.2.1
2011 iPhone 4S Launches with iOS 5.0
2012 iPhone 5! with ....shockingly iOS 6.0. Both the 3GS, the 4 and the 4S update
2013 Predictably the iPhone 5S, but also the new iPhone 5C (which is really just a 5 model in an Easter M&M flavored shell). iOS 7.0 The 4 performance lags, and then the next version to 7.2 alleviates some of those concerns :noid The 3GS model has stopped receiving updates past 6.1.6
2014 iPhone 6 and 6+ Launch with iOS 8. The 4 gets dumped off the list for the update as history has thus proven, and all others receive it. The 5C is still sold, but now as a paltry 8gb model from the minimum of 16gb it used to be. Very likely to be performance "concerns" with iOS 8 on the 4S. The future version 8.1? will likely alleviate these concerns? :noid :noid :noid
2015 iPhone 6S Launches along with the failure 6S+ (like the 5C) They use version 9.0 which includes an app that butters your toast. The 4S has been tossed away at version 8.2.8
2016 The NEW iPhone called The NEW iPhone goes on sale. Several deaths due to starvation are reported in the lines of people waiting for its launch. iOS 10.0 is included, which enrages the 5C users no one cared about anyways due to performance "concerns" which is then alleviated in version 9.1.0. The new software boasts an addition to the Healthcare app that monitors your bowel movements. Siri actually listens to you...always listens...but never responds. iPhone 5C has been quietly shuttered at 9.1.9, although rampant discrimination of these owners is reported.
2017 The iPhone Air Launches with massive rioting in the queuing lines. iOS 11 Launches. Siri has stopped listening to you, and now commands you what to to. A new app is included that, when pressed, sends everything you have ever done with your phone, and your bowel movements to Apple's Cupertino unfinished headquarters. Every iPhone 5 and 5S model is no longer supported past version 10.1.10 in which Siri mocks you openly for having such an obsolete product.
2018 There is no iPhone, Apples Cupertino spaceship styled Headquarters is finished. It is an actual spaceship and launches leaving a swath of destruction in its path. Everyone in the queuing lines miraculously disappear. Mass rioting ensues. Anybody with an iPhone of any model is the most at risk. Hipsters are decimated, Starbucks falls first. The Government is powerless to help. Cities fail and civilization crumbles. Amazon responds with drone strikes that are completely ineffective. Yahoo complains and asks for money to provide a solution. AOL retools their CD's to weaponize them, but they are too obsolete. Facebook strangely likes this, Instagram is too busy documenting the events (in color!) to be of any real help. The only hope now is in a company called Google.
...With something they codename "Project Skynet".

Is your iPad an embedded device? Does it have the ability to connect to a cellular network? AT&T, Verizon Etc. or is it WIFI only?
Modified: What is the direct problem you have? is your iPad just running slowly? or are you having problems connecting it to the internet?

The Wife's iPad is practically a brick since the iOS 8 update. Runs about 5 to 10 minutes, then locks up. She is actually pretty happy. Now she has an excuse to get rid of it and get something she can work with.
Personally, I do not know if there is a way to roll it back to iOS 7, and given she has never really been happy with the iPad, I am not going to make any effort to help her fix it. I'll be glad when it is gone just to not have to listen to her complain about it.

We have the original iPad, the first one released and we were among the first ones to get it (actually I had to get mine from Paris, France). It still runs great if you count out a few apps that refuse to run in the older hardware.

This ( the bold part) is the best thing to do with apple products..... :D
The way I see apple...you have the freedom to do what we want you to do.

Ahh...I guess than I don't think MrRipley's experience is comparable to mine.
To answer your question about the problem:
I have an Ipad2 16gb with 3g. I got the 3g not so much for the cellular data as for the gps functionality. I have used the cellular data from time to time as it is useful when traveling and the ability to buy a month of service without contract or setup charges is great. A few months ago where there used to be bars indicating quality of cell signal there is a permanent "No Service" message. From cursory web browsing there is some indication that it could be a software problem. Oh yeah I am still on ios 6 as I heard of slow down with upgrade to seven, (supposed to be better with later iterations of 7, though anecdotally my friend complains of enfeeblement of his.) I reset my network settings. The ipad says my sim is not provisioned. The reason I strongly suspect the "No Service" message is software related is that my mother has the same Ipad, pretty much unused which now has the same message. The people at the Mac Store said the path is network reset than restore which means upgrade, then hardware which means new ipad.
I guess I have a brief window to upgrade to 7 without learning how to jailbreak as with the 8 screwup apple still signs their end of a restore with 7 but I have to find a safe place to get it and figure out how to put it into itunes etc. to do the restore upgrade. I feel fairly certain that if I get 8 my experience will be like Skuzzy's. I'd rather have the functionality that I have, (for as long as it lasts,) than a brick with cell service.

There should be a restore option in iTunes. It's quite interesting how all the itrouble seems to hit Skuzzys family. All my devices (4 different iPhones, iPad, IMac, 3 different Macbooks) have been completely trouble free. The original iPhone did slow down a lot with OS update admittedly but by that time it was outdated as it was.

Apple is aware of the problems, and will be releasing 8.0.1 soon. In the meantime, they have stopped the push of the iOS 8 update (http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2014/09/25/apple-said-it-would-stop-providing-update-to-its-new-ios-8-software-after-user/) due to all the problems people are having.
Yes, it is just my family having problems. I am glad Apple considers our one lousy purchase to be so important.
I find it interesting how you ignore all the public outcries surrounding the problems with iOS 8. Would you like me to post twenty or thirty links which discuss all the various issues?
In the meantime, my Wife solved her issues by buying a Samsung thing, as the iPad was your basic brick. She could not figure out how to rollback to iOS 7, and I really am over the whole thing. She can finally do all the things she needs to do and I do not have to deal with a frustrated Wife.

Lol yeah that was like the first time an update bombed for Apple. How many bad updates MS had again? They're releasing 8.0.2 btw. In the meanwhile you can just restore the old version using iTunes.
I'm fairly sure this would never had happened had Steve Jobs been alive. He would rip peoples throats out for this.

Samsung is the future :old:

Media over here are full of headlines about the "Apple disaster". :)

I was thinking of what new phone to get and with all these issues including the weak frame that bends I think I will not go for the I-6. For now my trusty I-4 is working fine.

This isn't the first time idisasters hit Skuzzys family thats why I was saying. The update didn't seem to do anything to my iPhone5 anyway so I guess I was lucky.

You're probably right. According to people that were close to him, Jobs was a complete dick.

It is hard to understand a beautiful mind... although I have my views on apple....you can not discount the advances accomplished by this man's foresight...sure it was bits and pieces from here there and everywhere....but to get it to gel and become a vital way of life is quite amazing really ...some don't even realize what they had till they let it go unfortunately for this crowd...they can't get him back this time.
-
iPod and iTunes for music, iPhone for communication and the web, ipad for "computing" interface. I don't think any of that would have come to be and certainly not as well executed but for the dickish PT Barnum in a black turtleneck.
-
Nonsense :old:
What is up with you people?.
Steve Jobs was a business man not a crusader for freedom :rofl
Apple is a cult I tell you
If they polished a turd and put an apple logo on it the followers would buy it and hail Steve Jobs for his foward thinking
There is a picture of Apples sales team, you would not trust any of them with a blunt spoon

For once, Zack and I are in total agreement.
Apple is overpriced rubbish with a pretty bow on it, always has been and always will be.

You just don't know what you're talking about. I would never want to own an Android phone or tablet after having experience on both. Sure Apple costs but luckily I get everything for free.

And you would be wrong. I used to be an apple hater untill I was semi-forced to use one for work. From that experience I know that most of you are just prefudiced like I used to be. Apples rock, especially when you don't have to pick up that heavy price tag by yourself.
