Title: Lookin for new gunsights
Post by: Phoenix3107 on October 11, 2014, 08:29:01 PM
Does anyone have any idea where I could download some new gunsights for the AH planes? Can't seem to find any. :aok

For just general fighting, dive bombing, air to air rocket? Any plane in particular you need a sight for?

Just for general dogfight purposes.

If anyone wants the B25H 6000yd and the 410 5000 yd gunsights, I'll have to put them back up at my down load site.

The Revi gunsight, Revi C\12F that was used for aiming the WGr2 21 air to air rocket is a clunky nightmare. It's basically a C\12 with an addon optical unit. I've found some documents that talk about aiming the rockets and attack strategies. Seems one common method was being higher than the target to take advantage of the known trajectory drop and time to detonation based on your current speed. Everything was generally about attacking heavy bombers because they had to fly predictable flight paths.

So I found out what the special Revi C\12 F optical adaptor to aim the 21 cm Bordraketenanlage does.

The 21 cm Wgr has a right hand spin that pulls it off it's flight path laterally by 40 degrees at about 1200m. This is due to a strong Magnus Effect. The optical adaptor has a mirror that creates a lateral shift in the projected reticle. The shift could be adjusted for range.

Early Fw190 groups were told to adjust their aim manually to account for this. The rocket tubes were generally set for an 8 degree positive azimuth resulting in a detonation point at about 1200m or 5.5sec. While diverging 40 degrees right lateral to the target due to the Magnus Effect.

Your aircraft's speed will directly affect the distance at which the timer goes off. The timer was a 30sec timer while the rocket was most often set for 5.5 sec. By 7sec the lateral shift was almost 50 degrees. The fuse was a timer\contact fuse. A table for using the 21cm in an Fw190 shows the following for the timer.

800m   4.4sec 8 degree
1000m 5.0sec 8 degree
1200m 5.5sec 8 degree

4.4sec = 34 degree Mag eff
5.0sec = 37 degree Mag eff
5.5sec = 40 degree Mag eff

German pilots hated this thing even if it had a devastating effect on bombers.

Wonder if our game rocket has a right hand Magnus Effect? Even the MK108 30mm round had one. Almost 2ft at 400m.

I used a better translator in reading about the Wgr 21.

The optical adaptor to the Revi C\12 making it the C\12F was a range finder that used double image refraction to help determine range. Eventually a Revi16 adaptor was created. Not all fighters carrying the Wgr 21 had these range finder Revi, and had to estimate range using the Revi reticle.

The pilots early on with the Wgr 21 in 1943 flying 109, 190, 110, had to know about the following and account for it.

German:

Drallabweichung:

Durch den Drall wird die Granate nach rechts aus der Flugbahn herausgedrückt
(Magnuseffekt). Deshalb ist es erforderlich, daß der Flugzeugführer etwa um 40° links vorbeizielt.

English Translation:

Spin deviation:

Through the swirl the grenade is pushed out to the right of the flight path
(Magnus effect). Therefore, it is necessary that the pilot about by aiming at 40°to the left.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By 1944 and the introduction of the Doppelzünder R Dopp.Z. S/60 fuse(30sec timer\contact detonator). The launch tube was mounted with a 2° left hand deflection to account for the right hand Magnus Effect of 2° by the improved Wgr 21 rocket.

My apology to Morfiend for my poor translation work and misunderstanding.

The rocket tube had 4 sway braces and a center connector called the "Glühzünder 28" or Electric igniter 28. This was an explosive electrically ignited bolt to allow emergency jettisoning of the rocket tube. Both jettisoned at the same time. I suppose for our game purposes it would be fair to model this to allow for our MA combat environment.

The Wgr1 in our game appears to have a fuse detonation range of 1120yds or 2-3 sec. The fuse was spin activated and took between 100-110m of travel to engage. This accounts for 4.4sec to 1200m. The Wgr 21 in practical use was a 250 m\sec device. Your airspeed affected it's actual burst range. We should be able to select at least three common ranges for the fuse on the ground. Air to air 800, 1000, 1200 or air to ground with a range of about 2000. It's similar to the timer\contact fuse in the 88 AA round and the 88 AP.
