Surprising results from tests: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/10/27/nvidia_geforce_gtx_980_sli_4k_video_card_review/11#.VE6HxJOUfow
AMD crossfire is as fast or beats a SLI 980 despite being slower as single cards.

they said for the most part. also think they only tested in 2 games.
but what does this mean? it was at the end of the article.
"That's not enough for a trend, but it is interesting to note. We will have to see how Far Cry 4 does here next month."

Not exactly an earth shattering revelation. None of the games they tested are optimized for SLI.

Is this sort of result more likely due to hardware, software, or the combination of the two?
I am just curious. I haven't used two video cards for a long while, since my attempt to extend the life of an ageing AMD 5850 by adding a second one to my old i7-930 rig. In that case, I only realized a gain of some 20% in synthetic benchmarks and nothing that was easily detectable by the Mark I Eyeball in Aces High.
