I spent hours and hours playing those.  :rock I still have the disks for X-wing Tie fighter and another one that went with it I can't think of now but played it to the end finally destroying the superstar destroyer.

Those Tie Advanced were hard to beat.  :furious

Hopefully they will make it available on steam or origin.

Why? Steam would just upload the old games as they were(bugs and all). GOG actually works on the games to update & fix them to run on modern systems.

GOG is run by the Devs who make the Witcher games ( CD Projekt). They sell these games DRM free.

Why?

1.  I prefer not submitting payment information to an unfamiliar web site.
2.  Any updates made to the game down the road can be downloaded through the steam client without needing to go to some unfamiliar web site looking for it risking a virus or worse.

Steam would just upload the old games as they were(bugs and all). GOG actually works on the games to update & fix them to run on modern systems.

Steam will upload whatever software the developer/publisher wants, fixed or otherwise.   As long as they have an agreement with Valve Corporation(and have rights to the software) this shouldn't be an issue.  There are already a number of 'old' games available on steam that have been fixed to run on modern systems.  Same with Origin (however I think they only sell EA exclusive software and not third party publishers) but you can as of right now purchase old PC games made back in the 1990's like Crusader no-regret/no-remorse as well as the old wing commander games which will run on your modern system.   No hassle no fuse to install just download and play.  It installs everything you need with a single press of a button.

GoG is trustworthy. In any case you should use a separate Visa/Mastercard account for web purchases and only have money on it when you need to.

2.  Any updates made to the game down the road can be downloaded through the steam client without needing to go to some unfamiliar web site looking for it risking a virus or worse.

The game is from 1994... Safe to say no more updates are coming. While your caution is commendable it is bit excessive; online game vendors and publishers are perfectly safe.

Steam takes 30% of every sale... Why should another online vendor like GoG agree to that?

I just want them to fix x-wing alliance not working on newer video cards/ operating systems.

I use to mod the tie fighter games way way back on the day, but the enhanced models and effects for x-wing alliance is....game changing.

Welcome. ;)

:Edit: Im still trying to track down that tie fighter total conversion for x-wing alliance.

GoG is trustworthy.

I'm sure they would never sell my contact info or anything either..  :D

If they made changes to make it work those changes might be updated.

While your caution is commendable it is bit excessive; online game vendors and publishers are perfectly safe.
It's about convenience in finding an untainted patch downloaded through steam(yes a vendor that is perfectly safe), there's nothing excessive about it. You push a button to check for updates, no searching needed, no worries.

Steam takes 30% of every sale... Why should another online vendor like GoG agree to that?

yeah but a 100% of nothing is still nothing right?   ;)

Depends on what GoG intent is. Are they doing this to increase their user base or are they doing this to increase sales?

Having access to Steam's large user base might be worth giving up a certain percentage for increased sales.  But if GoG is only looking to increase their user base then selling it exclusively from their site would make sense.

GoG is just as reputable as Steam is.  Their intent is not anymore nefarious than Steam's is.

Now that's some precise phrasing. :D

It was worth the $20 to me.  Kind of forgot what it was like not having DRM on a game.

Now, imagine if they remade them using the FreeSpace 2 Engine...  *drools*

Or perhaps a new engine like the CryEngine...

I'd like to be able to run it at full graphics without having to build a new machine, thank you. :lol  Admittedly the CryEngine is awesome, but I feel the FreeSpace 2 Engine would fit better in my opinion. :aok

Um... Freespace 2 was released in 1999; the year after the updated Windows version of X-Wing and TIE Fighter. I don't think there would be much of an improvement.

That may be but it is the correct platform to be used if it update is to be made.

Reference the FS Source Code Project. And this video that I made years ago is not even the latest iteration

Do they make you buy an expansion pack in order to hear the dialogue in the cut scenes?

I have to dig up my old x-wing CD. I had a companion disk : "Balance of Power" I don't see that one in the update.  :headscratch:

Because it's not XW vs Tie fighter which was 1998. This is XW 1994 and Tie Fighter 1995 and Tie CD collectors edition 1997/1998.
