And what exactly are the 'bad news' now? Aren't people supposed to know?  :headscratch:

Didn't say people shouldn't know.

Just a bit of a downer that a glass of wine is being compared to a donut/doughnut.

"The Royal Society for Public Health said 80% of adults questioned did not know a large glass of wine contains a similar number of calories to a doughnut"

I don't think the calorie count of a particular foodstuff is a sound basis for comparison. EG 400 calories of sugar is not the same metabolically as 400 calories of fat. That said I believe in more information not less. I don't think this is the same thing as those labels that instruct you not to use a hair dryer in the shower which, in my opinion, are interfering with the natural course of human evolution.

I like truthful and "complete" information on food labels.

I like it more now than I did a few years ago, because 2 of my 3 kids have serious food allergies and it is important to know exactly what's in those foods.  My oldest son went into shock from a tiny sample of spaghetti sauce, processed in a factory that also processed peanuts.  The notice was in teeny tiny print on that label and we missed it, almost killed my kid.  My youngest son is allergic to eggs and milk.  So they could cover the entire product with information on what the food product is made of, and that would be a really good thing for me and my family.

I don't think it can even be considered a burden on the food manufacturer/producer.  If they don't know whats in it, they shouldn't be selling it as food.

Food labeling practices seem to be driven by legal departments re-writing ad copy from marketing departments, either as statements of "we are the best", or to replies from marketing to legal on a query about product ingredients or processes.

.... The notice was in teeny tiny print on that label and we missed it, almost killed my kid....

John Oliver did a great segment on Misleading Labeling of Food Products.

To your other point:

Food manufacturers have successfully stopped country of origin and GMO labeling for years.

Pisses me off.  Going to have a donut, I mean drink, to forget about it.

There is an effort in NY to put on soft drink and alcohol labels how many miles running or walking it will take to burn off the calories listed. Weight loss happens by controlling your caloric intake. Exercise is not an efficient way to reduce body fat. Food companies know we are addicted to fat\sugar\salt and gluten. These things make up the largest portions on ingredient lists after the primary ingredient.

Anyone remember a few years back the post doctoral student in nutrition who ate only twinkies for 65 days and lost about 70lbs? He ate less calories than his body index required for maintenance and burned body fat to make up the difference. Most people lack the discipline to control their addiction to fat\sugar\salt and gluten because those things taste so good.

I'm on a diet now that I count every calorie and nutrient I intake, seems to be working cause I dropped 25lbs in 6 wks, and have 25 to go. System is working great. Doing it due to having High BP and I loath taking any type of medication.  I'd welcome it.

See, the first part there, about exercise, I just don't think you can run off sugar calories. I think the sugar messes with your metabolism and to some extent fat isn't energy storage but your body responding to a whacked out diet that is a new in human history terms.

Yet ingredient labels still arent required on "beer". Because they don't want you to know exactly what "malt beverage" is.
