This does not have to apply to all the AH planes, but maybe could there be a control key for planes to open or release their canopies for planes for the pilots to bail out. In specifics, maybe for planes like the 51D, the 47-D25-N models, late war Spitfires(maybe even the early models if I'm not mistaken), basically any aircraft that was able to give the pilot time and space to get out. I don't think it was just the Allied planes with the bubble canopies and such, I think there were some Axis planes too that were able to release them: the 109s(I think), the Ki's(Probably the 43 and 84, maybe even the Niki too... :headscratch:)
How many planes did have the ability to do that?, I'm not sure. But I just think it'd be a bit cool to add something like that.
What other aircraft were able to have those types of canopies though? :headscratch:

And the ability to slide them back in flight :airplane:

Should be able to open it and look out the side for oil hits like you could in cfs2

And there should be limitations on when the canopy can be opened. IIRC in the P-38 the side windows being opened caused buffeting of tail surfaces as one example. More than likely all the bubble canopy aircraft had a IAS limit for flight with the canopy open.

If there is an oil hit/leak it will most likely be more than obvious without opening the canopy/window. Engine oil quantity, temp, and pressure gauges should provide pretty immediate indications.

it would be funny if then the oil hits you right on the face and then you go blind :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl.

Heh, that can actually happen in ROF.

Yes please, if we where able to fly with open canopys the SBD will become the most popular ride:

That is one sexy airplane. :x
(OK, Hellcats and a few other works too)

I mean so you can see with oil all over the windshield

Don't we pretty much have that now?

He wants to be able to stick his head out and see around the windscreen that is covered with oil. Of course then his face is going to be covered in oil also. :)
Busted an oil cooler on the 182 once upon a time…..lots and lots of oil down the side of the airplane….I had no desire to have that on my face.

Yeah, I hear ya Columbo. I'd rather look through the oil covered windscreen than have hot oil in my eyes. OOPS, sorry, realism snuck in. :salute

I don't agree with the reason given but I think it would be cool for carrier launch and recovery per WWII sop. Not a biggie, though and not worth coding when bigger enhancements are in the making.

The commander of StG1, Helmut Mahlke, after his engine in his Ju-87B was hit by Soviet ground fire and his canopy covered in oil, he opened it and stuck his head out so he could see as he landed in a small field. In another case a few days later, his engine again was hit but this time caught on fire and opened his canopy and stood up because the flames were starting to enter into the cockpit. He flew like this for a few minutes to give his rear gunner a chance to bail out before he did*.
This P-47 pilot also opened up his canopy after suffering an oil leak and stuck his head out so he could see. You can him carrying his flight helmet and oxygen mask in his hand and how covered in oil the stuff is. So there is some basis of realism in the OP's wish.
